Whether you are a seasoned author or just getting started, The Empty Inkwell is dedicated to providing you with story ideas, writing tips, fun challenges and an awesome community of likeminded readers and writers.
DISCLAIMER: Much of this is adapted from online and written resources. As this is mostly a compilation of several different resources, the only credit I claim is the editing credit (minor adaptations to fit fanfiction writing in particular). Please see the chapter titled “References” for a comprehensive list of websites and print resources that were used when creating this.
There will be three main sections to this shop: Writing Help, Writing Challenges and Adopt-A-Plot.
Writing Help: This section will contain all there is to know about writing, from a step-by-step to writing a fic, to understanding the nuances of dialogue and engaging all five senses in your descriptions. It will have many subsections, each labeled according to the topic it covers (ie. Genre 101, World Building 102, Characterization 103, etc).
Challenges: This section will contain writing challenges. This section is for those who want to challenge themselves to write something new, or need an extra boost of motivation in the form of a contest. At the moment, there will only be small prizes (50 KP for the winner), but prizes will expand the large the community of readers and sponsors grows.
Adopt-a-Plot: This section will contain plots that are looking for homes. I encourage you to PM me if you have a plot you want to put up for "adoption" and you wish to see it off to a good home. The more people we have contributing, that large this section will grow. All credit will be given to the original creators of the plots.
References: This section will contain all of the resources used in the creation of this fic, including credits to authors of fics on this site. Please refer to here if you would like to visit the websites used or purchase some of the print materials referenced.
Hello, ya'll. My name is Jae and I'm a 23 year old ESL teacher from New York. I have been a fanfiction reader since the tender age of 7, and a writer since the ripe old age of 9. I have written for many different fandoms, including Harry Potter, Holes, Final Fantasy, and of course K-Pop. In the 13 years that I have been writing and reading fanfics, I have come across many different plots, writing styles, tips, tools, tricks and everything in between. I have taken several specialized classes on writing, studied with award-winning published authors and have two award-winning journalists for parents.
That being said, I still don't know everything there is to know about writing. From one reader/writer to another, this shop was created as a way to share with the community the things that I have learned, and also hear from all of you what things you know and would like to share. I have a lot of experience, but I am far from perfect and am constantly seeking ways to better my writing. I hope that together, we can all embark on a fun and worthwhile journey of writing discovery and improvement :)
