Tell Me More

Vesalis

Irene crept close to her mothers study room remaining vigilant of any soldiers that would be wandering around. Irene stood glued to the wall as she eavesdropped on the conversation that Suho and her mother were having, it seemed important as they spoke in hushed whispers down the corridor.

“Long ago a mage had said Vesalis was a kingdom that did not exist in this realm.” The queen started already confusing Suho and an eavesdropping Irene.

“Mage? Realm?” Suho questioned.

“Yes, there are many realms in this universe and apparently Vesalis was one of them. This mage was executed by the land of Luxor due to his powers of wielding magic however before he had died he said they were the most powerful magic wielders of any realm.” The queen informed resting in her chair carefully watching her sons face contort in a mixture of confusion and disbelief.

“But mother magic isn’t real.” Suho said his voice full of conviction however a small of flicker of doubt danced in his eyes something the queen picked up on.

“The king of Luxor had said it was a long time ago and the king of the time had been on a killing spree of anyone he did not like. This supposed mage had been sprouting rumours that the king had cheated the people of Luxor on numerous occasions so the royal family should be overthrown.”  The queen further explained recalling the events that the late king of Olbas had told her long ago, it seemed fitting that she was now able to start fitting the pieces together.

“How did he know of Vesalis?” Suho questioned.

“It was an old tale of magic that got lost in time that nobody cared to tell future generations.” The queen replied, how ironic they don’t tell the tale of the kingdom that is going to come destroy us Irene thought sarcastically.

“So magic isn’t real in the end he is just a supposed mage.” Suho said slight relief in his voice.

“We both know that statement feels wrong, there is something off putting with Vesalis, their red eyes speak for themselves. When the man you had interrogated spoke of magic did you not believe him for a split second.” The queen paused as she watched Suho take in the information, doubt returning to his eyes. “We should not be quick to jump to conclusions but that doesn’t mean we should ignore all possibilities no matter how scary or abnormal they may seem.”

Irene had been intently listening to the conversation until she heard heavy footsteps, soldier Irene thought, looking around there was nowhere to hide, act normal with that thought Irene started to walk in the opposite direction of the guard.

“Princess.” The guard called, Irene turned back to look at him and saw him looking at her strangely. “Why are you heading towards the armoury room?” He questioned, looking back at the direction she was heading she saw he was indeed correct as there was a big sign on the door saying armoury.

“I was erm just searching for Yeri, we were playing and she disappeared.” Irene effortlessly lied with a smug smile as she saw the guard truly believed her.

“Ah the young princess seems to be at it again, last time I saw her she was in the kitchen attempting to get the chef to make a cake.” The guard replied, Irene chuckled a she heard what her younger sister was doing.

“Thank you.” Irene said walking towards the kitchen seeing what mischief her sister was now getting in to with the chef, maybe I should check up on that book she was supposed to have finished Irene thought knowing fully well what the answer was going to be.

“But Wendy why can’t I have a cake right now?” Yeri asked as she followed the chef around who was busy making dinner for the castle.

“Because you have to eat proper food before your dessert and the queen had said nothing of desserts so I can’t.” Wendy replied, Wendy had been part of the castle since she was a child her mother had passed away giving birth to Wendy whilst her father had been a soldier in the army. Unfortunately he had died in battle, hearing the bad news the king had taken Wendy in to the castle and placed shelter over her head. Growing up Wendy had become close to the family as they treated her as one of their own, however Wendy had entered the castle to be Irene’s handmaiden, growing up she wanted to make food so she was allowed to become a chef in the castle.

“If you finished the book I gave you then we can make an exception.”  Irene said from the door frame, many servants were rustling around helping to make the food, even above the voices of the servants Yeri still heard Irene.

“Well I guess it’s a er good thing I had finished the book then.” Yeri said as she watched Irene walk closer with a smirk on the older girls face, it seemed the older girl didn’t believe her.

“Oh really now, why don’t you tell me what happened at the end?”  Irene questioned stopping in front of Yeri.

“What you were reading? Wow you’ve been here with me all day. When did you have time to read whilst pestering me for cake?” Wendy exclaimed in surprise causing Yeri to glare at the older girl whilst Irene laughed at the two.

“How much did you read?” Irene asked.

“3 pages.” Yeri replied sighing at her misfortune whilst the older two girls laughed at her.

“Guess that means no cake.” Wendy said as she went back to preparing the food.

“Let’s go to the dining table mother and Suho must already be there.” Irene said as she held Yeri’s hand making her way out of the kitchen waving bye to Wendy.

“Doesn’t breakfast, dinner and lunch always seem strained now.” Yeri voiced out-loud as the two walked side by side, this comment saddened Irene as she looked over at her younger sister. “I sometimes feel that mother and Suho are neglecting me we walk past each other like strangers, we hardly speak the only time mother speaks to me is at night before we fall asleep.”

“That’s why you like sleeping next to her.” Irene said causing Yeri to nod at the answer, before they entered the dining room Irene enveloped Yeri in to a hug to which the younger girl happily returned. “Mother and Suho want to find the people as soon as possible, they care for our safety that’s why they’re trying so hard. Never feel neglected Yeri I’m right by your side, if you feel lonely call me and I’ll be there forever and always.”

“Promise?” Yeri questioned sticking out her pinky.

“Promise.” Irene replied hooking her pinky in to Yeri’s. “Now let’s get some food.” With that the two sisters entered the dining room, even though dinner had gone like every other day with minimal speaking today it felt different for Yeri and Irene. They were able rekindle their sisterly bond and make a promise that was not just said to make them feel better, but made to make them believe in one another that no matter what happens they will be there for one another even if they felt excluded by their mother and Suho. Once they had finished eating everybody retired to their bedrooms to sleep for the night except for Irene as she stared outside her window once again. It seems there are more stars out today, it would be nice to star gaze, Irene thought to herself as the image of the strange girl entered her mind. The northwest wing Irene recalled her saying, Irene discreetly left her room and walked down the wing, how convenient that I sleep in the northwest wing and I don’t even know about this door to the roof Irene thought to herself. It seemed many ironic thoughts occurred to her today. Stopping midway through the wing Irene saw a tapestry one she would always walk past as it never meant anything to her it was just a picture of the kingdom however that wasn’t interesting no it was the way in which the artist emphasised the sky with a bright star just above the northwest tower. Thinking it was a clue Irene moved the tapestry to the side and saw a door, a rush of pride flooded through her as she looked at the stairs in the dark stairwell.

“How many more passages don’t I know about?” Irene questioned out-loud as she walked up the spiral staircase, once she reached the top she opened the door and saw a mesmerising view of the sky and kingdom just like the painting on the tapestry, the view that welcomed her was breath-taking. Walking to the edge Irene allowed a bright smile to overcome her features as she saw how small the kingdom looked from up here, a few light were seen as people were making their way home whilst guards patrolled the area. Looking up Irene saw the stars closer than ever, they looked bigger and brighter to her from up her, putting her hand up as if she was going to hold a star Irene allowed the gust of wind to send shivers down her spin as she felt the fresh air.

“Great view isn’t it?” An all too familiar voice questioned startling Irene once more as the shorter girl put a hand over her racing heart-beat.

“You really should stop creeping up on me.” Irene said as she attempted to calm her heart down. “I might get a heart attack.” Irene mumbled causing the other girl to laugh.

“Don’t worry you have a strong heart.” The mysterious girl said, strong heart? I’ve heard that elsewhere Irene thought however she pushed the thought aside as she heard the other girl compliment her. “And you’re pretty cute when you’re startled.” Irene blushed at the sudden compliment causing the girl chuckle at the reaction.

“What’s your name? I can’t keep thinking of you as the mysterious girl or the other girl or the manner less girl” Irene questioned as she sat on the edge of the castle with the other girl who was chucking at the names Irene had called her.

“Manner less girl?” The girl questioned lifting an eyebrow up questioning why Irene would think that way about her.

“Well you are basically trespassing right now  you are an outlaw especially since you’re part of Vesalis and you randomly jut pop out of nowhere and scare me and to top it off you randomly say things in my head.” Irene informed creating a checklist in her head of all the things this girl had done. “However you didn’t say anything today how come?”

“Aw did the princess miss me?” The girl asked causing Irene to shake her head and turn it the other way before the other could see her red cheeks, deciding not to tease the older girl further she simply decided to answer the question. “Well I was busy today so I apologise for not contacting you.”

“Busy doing what?” Irene questioned wanting to know more about this strange girl who just likes to star gaze in the royal castle where if caught she could be sentenced to death.

“Secret Vesalis business.” The girl teased causing Irene to suddenly become serious as she carefully watched the other girl, understanding what she had accidentally implied the other girl flailed her arms around desperately in an attempt to explain her-self . “Not like that I was just teasing, I was simply studying to get better with using magic and control it.”

“Ah okay.” Irene said believing the girl however there was one thing that was bothering her. “Don’t people from Vesalis have a marking on their forehead to showcase their loyalty?” This question caught the other girl off guard but she couldn’t help but smile as she looked at Irene’s curious face.

“You really are inquisitive; in a different realm they would call you Sherlock Holmes.” The girl said confusing Irene however the girl just waved it off. “If we meet again I’ll tell you of Sherlock and his stories, but back to your question yes they do have a marking on their forehead.”

“Then how come…” Irene trailed off and looked at the girl closely there was no marking anywhere to be seen, the other girl was hiding many things from Irene a fact she strangely liked and didn’t at the same time. “Wait you’re not part of Vesalis.”

“Indeed Sherlock.” The girl said with a grin however this confused Irene even further as she looked at the girl, for this long she had been putting her in Vesalis where is she really from?

“You know I have more questions now don’t you?” Irene stated as she watched the other girl nod at her with a smile.

“That’s fine, this way we get to know more about one another.” The girl said and for some reason for the first time Irene felt her heart race as she listened to the girl. The stars reflected in the pool of red in her eyes Irene in, and for a while the two simply stared at one another brown eyes gazing at red eyes, innocence gazing at desire, their eyes held so much of their stories and Irene wanted to read this compelling strangers story after all there was one thing Irene saw from this girls eye’s and that was the desire of adventure. Something Irene craved as she felt suffocated constantly being hid behind the castle walls or being unable to roam the kingdom freely.

“Then tell me about yourself first starting with your name.” Irene said tenderly as she watched the girl smile at her.

“Well I’m Seulgi 23 years old and I don’t know what else to say.” Seulgi replied causing Irene to laugh as Seulgi scratched the nape of her neck, as she couldn’t think of anything that could interest the older girl.

“What about your family?” Irene questioned the smile fell from Seulgi’s face as she looked up at the stars, a reaction Irene was all too familiar with.

“I don’t have any they passed away.” Seulgi replied her tone becoming lonely as she closed her eyes reminiscing thoughts of her family before they had passed away.

“I’m sorry.” Irene said however Seulgi brushed it away as she looked at Irene.

“It’s alright it’s been a long time now, how are you coping with the loss of your father?” Seulgi questioned, now it was Irene’s turn to look up at the stars searching for the one that shone brightest among them all.

“Yeri feels neglected; I should have known sooner and helped her. I just er don’t…” Irene sighed as she looked back down at the kingdom. “I’m sorry we don’t even know each other and here I was ready to throw my feelings at you.”

“It’s alright, you need to let it out somewhere, everybody needs somebody to listen to. I’m not an expert with family relationships but you being by her side is the most you can do, be there for her physically and mentally, she’s still young and doesn’t have the understanding or maturity you do. But if your love is strong you will persevere you’re sisters you will be there for one another. And when you need someone you can always come up here and look at the stars and let it out, and I’ll be here too after all this is  my favourite place to star gaze.” Seulgi said, Irene listened intently to what Seulgi was saying and allowed a smile to radiate as she looked at the younger girl comforting her. Irene wrapped Seulgi in a hug surprising the younger girl who was slightly awkward with physical affection, once they broke apart Irene blushed and looked away causing Seulgi to chuckle.

“Thank you.” Irene said still not facing Seulgi.

“It’s alright, now it’s late you should get some sleep.” Seulgi stood up and stretched as did Irene. “Goodnight princess.” With that Seulgi disappeared in smoke.

“Goodnight Seulgi.” Irene muttered as she walked down to her room, a concoction of emotions rummaging through her heart ranging from gratefulness, to happiness, to familiarity and finally towards curiosity. Who exactly are you Seulgi? Irene thought to herself as she fell on top of her bed closing her eyes and lulling her-self to sleep with the image of this mysterious Seulgi.

Chapter 10: Ohhhhh. I'm seriously intrigued with Seulgi and Joy's background at this point. They're related to the enemy but renounced their affliation with them. This is good, better than I expected actually since I'm a er for this trope. Thanks for the update!
