In early 2016, Hello! Project announced their plans to expand into the Korean music market. With the constant growth of the popularity of Korean pop all over the word, the higher-ups at Hello!Pro believed that adding a Korean-Japanese group to their arsenal of girl groups would prove to be a valuable asset for the company. So on February 21st, 2016 Hello!Pro announced their plans on recruiting the members for their new group. They were to hold an audition in Seoul, South Korea on May 7th and Tokyo, Japan on May 13th (for the public and Hello! Project Kenshuusei separately). From those two auditions, Hello! Project judges and representatives would choose an undisclosed amount of members to go to their headquarters in Japan to receive training from Hello! Project before making their official debuts in both Korea and Japan on January 1st, 2017.
The name chosen for this new group was announced as Ikigai and was said to be chosen by the members themselves (Ikigai is a Japanese concept meaning a reason for being, encompassing joy, a sense of purpose and meaning and a feeling of well-being).
