21st Century Girl

When The Sun Shines

"I said answer me!"

Detective Lee winced as he watched his superior DA Park slam his hand on the metal table. The suspect, however, did not budge. It's almost as if he's used to these types of interrogations. Judging from his case file, which indicated his previous crimes (petty theft, bar fights), he might just be a regular at police stations.

Through the two-way mirrors, Hyuk saw how his superior tried his "I'm Furious, Goddamnit!" technique on the thug.

Didn't work.

"He's been like this for hours already," remarked Soo Ok, "I watched Inspector Jung try to get words out of him. He's flat-out stubborn. He's been threatened, almost slapped, and hit by a metal chair, but he just won't say anything."

"Did he deny it?"

"He didn't. But that's all he said."

The man (named Go In Sung) maintained a blank expression on his face, almost as if he didn't notice the district attorney going wild on him. Nothing at all.

Hyuk and Soo Ok watched as DA Park give up and let go of the man, heaving exasperatedly. He left the interrogation room and arrived on the other side. Once he was inside, he flung the case file on the table and growled.

"That man is wasting our time!" he exclaimed, "He won't speak up!" He rubbed his forehead frustratedly, continuously ranting about Go In Sung. Hyuk, on the other hand, kept his eyes on the perpetrator. Unlike the other suspects, he was a combination of confidence and the lack of it.

Whatever it was, Hyuk was sure he was hiding something.

Without saying another word, he got the file from the table and turn a deaf ear to his superior's warnings. He went inside the interrogation room.

Go In-Sung looked up at him as he pulled a metal chair and sat down.

Hyuk didn't say anything as he sat there. He quietly perused through the file folder. From his peripheral vision, he could see the assailant eyeing him. But the detective ignored him; instead he continued reading the suspect's file (which he dugged from the basement three hours ago).

It's already been ten minutes and both Hyuk and the suspect have not said anything. The former was still busy reading.

"What are you supposed to be?"

The assailant was the first to break the ice.

Hyuk looked up lazily from the files and gazed at the attacker straight in the eye. He said nothing again, pursed his red lips, and continued reading.

"Is this some sort of scare tactic?" asked the suspect again.

The detective looked up again with the same deadpan expression on his face. His bloody red lips parted, but no words came out. Instead, he just stared intently at his suspect.

Go In-Sung slightly fidgeted in his seat.

"If you think you'll scare me with your silence, you'll have another thing coming, buddy," said the suspect, "Did they really think sending a handsome officer will get my guard down? I'm not a woman."

Hyuk still said nothing. Behind him, he could practically hear his superiors wondering what he was doing there. He fervently hoped they wouldn't step in.

"That's right," he suddenly said, using his calm tone, "You're not a woman."

He read through the case file.

"In fact, I know who you are."

The suspect's eyes showed his visible surprise.

"You're a child of divorce, the third son out of six kids," he read, "Failed to finish high school; managed to get a job at a local chicken place; lost it; got another job; dabbled in drugs --"

"Alright, if you think reading from that little case file of yours will scare me --"

Hyuk closed the folder.

"In middle school, you stuck glue up a classmate's nose because he called you fat, but really you were just burly. It's what motivated you to get fit...so you can beat up those people who brought you down," he continued, "But the drugs came and it all spiralled down there."

He leaned forward.

"You had a high school girlfriend who sold you the drugs. She broke up with you once you got in too deep, thinking you weren't worthy enough. So that's when you decided that you needed acceptance from someone in the same circle--"

Hyuk got out a photo.

"A gang -- that make sense, right?"

He pointed to one man.

"That scrawny figure is you."

Hyuk got out another case photo, then another.

"That's you while you were out in a bar," he said pointing to the first photo, "Sipping on beer because that's the only thing you can afford. Oh and that's you with a woman you can't even score. God, I don't know; probably because most of your gang members are more handsome than you are--"

"Stop!"

But Hyuk took another photo. "You must like scotch a lot, huh? But how do you afford it? Ah the wonders of dirty jobs, huh?"

"SHUT UP!"

The suspect reached and grabbed Hyuk by the collar, his nostrils flaring. His eyes were also flashing in anger.

Hyuk, on the other hand, remained calm. Go In-Sung's hold on him tightened.

"How does it feel?" taunted Hyuk, "Embarassing? Terrifying?"

"How did you come across these?"

The detective looked at his victim in the eye.

"Why don't you ask yourself? You do the same thing."

He grasped the stalker's collar and pulled him closer.

"You asked me who I was," he continued, whispering dangerously, "If you're not careful, I can be your worst nightmare."

Without another word, Detective Lee viciously pushed his suspect away, causing Go In-Sung to stumble on the floor, but not before hitting his arm on the metal table. There was a violent clanging of metal everywhere as the stalker groaned in pain. Hyuk walked towards the crumpled figure of Go In-Sung, kneeling down, and looking at him in the eye.

"Now, I'm going to ask you again," he said in the same calm yet dangerous tone, "Tell me what you are."

"And cut!"

Immediately, Sun Hee wiped away the tears from her face as the director ended the scene. A bunch of makeup artists ran by her side and started touching her up while the director talked with the camera man.

"That was a great shot, Sun Hee," commented the director, "Your scenes are over. I think you can get some rest now."

"Really?" she asked.

"Yes, I heard you had a rough couple of days last week," said her director, "Besides, we only need you for a few scenes."

That last comment sort of stung her. While she appreciated her director's concern, did he really have to remind her that she didn't have much of a big role in this drama?

"Thank you, director," she said, bowing out of the scene. She waved away the makeup artists, telling them that she was finished anyway and headed over to the tent. Her co-actor Won Bin passed by, greeting her casually, and hoping she was okay. She smiled at him, despite resenting him a bit. She still can't believe he had more lines than her.

Jin Hae told her that she would pick her up in ten minutes. The actress got her belongings, bowing to the rest of the cast and staff (she was sure the main actress just gave her a smug smile), and said her goodbyes. It only took her exactly ten minutes to wrap up and wait diligently by the location's gate. She could already feel her stomach grumbling. Sun Hee was already craving for some spicy noodles.

Maybe I can ask Jin Hae to drop by a nearby shop.

A black car parked right in front of her.

For a second, she backed away, her heart thumping rapidly. The last incident had her traumatized.

When the window rolled down, she was relieved (and surprised) to see the face of Detective Lee Hyuk.

"Get in," he told her.

"Wait, but Jin Hae is picking me up."

"No she's not. I'm picking you up," he said, "There's something you need to know."

His voice sounded so urgent, but at the back of Sun Hee's head, there was a sense of awkwardness. The detective's look, however, urged her to hurry and get inside his car. Automatically, she touched the front seat's car handle, but she stopped.

Instead, she rode at the backseat.

Once she closed the door, she noticed Lee Hyuk looking at her from the mirror.

"Why are you there?" he asked.

"I...I feel tired," she lied, "I wanted to...stretch a bit."

But really, she just felt a little shy.

That backhug episode in the hospital still had its effects on her. She was surprised when Lee Hyuk did not pull away immediately. They stood still for almost two minutes, when Sun Hee returned to her senses.

She was the one who pulled away.

The actress couldn't think of a proper excuse for her actions. When Lee Hyuk looked at her for a second, she just said that she felt dizzy and limped towards the bed.

This was the first time she saw him again.

He had been too busy dealing with her case (among others) that the station sent two rookie officers to watch her from afar. It was odd and sort of embarassing to see him right now.

"Tired, huh?" he asked, before starting the ignition. Without another word, he started the car.

"So...um...what did you want to tell me?" she asked, lounging herself at the back seat.

"Your stalker case."

He said it so casually, but seriously.

"What about it?"

Lee Hyuk then stopped the car, causing Sun Hee to wobble in her seat. The detective looked at her from the rearview mirror.

"It's more serious than we thought," he told her.

"What do you mean?"

Lee Hyuk turned around to face her. Sun Hee noticed that the detective was in need of three things: sleep, some moisturizer, and a facial. The dark circles under his eyes told much about his sleepless nights again.

But despite all of that, he still looked so handsome.

"Remember that stalker who broke in your dressing room before?" he asked.

"Yeah."

"Well, it's not the same guy."

She gasped. "You mean there are two stalkers?"

Lee Hyuk didn't know how to break the news properly. It seemed surreal to him as well, but it just proved his theory that the world was evil. There was some good, but there was definitely evil.

Kim Sun Hee looked so clueless as she stared back at him.

How do I tell her?

He remembered how she looked that night she was almost kidnapped. She was all helpless and fragile. But Lee Hyuk also knew that Kim Sun Hee was stronger than she looked.

"I have two stalkers?"

He gazed at her.

"You might have a network of stalkers."

"A network?"

Her round eyes widened in disbelief.

"You mean there are more of them?"

He cleared his throat.

"I don't think it's just a simple stalker case anymore, Miss Sun Hee," he said, "The man only said that they were doing it for someone. So, your stalkers collaborate into one big stalking network for one person."

"I don't get it."

Sun Hee looked confused. Hyuk wished she would just stay that way.

"Let's just put it this way," he said, "You might have on obsessed fan who is rich enough to hire a group of people to stalk you and eventually, kidnap you."

She was stumped.

Hyuk expected this sort of reaction from her. Back at the station, when they all arrived at that realization, a few of the officers wanted to throw up while DA Park wished to beat the life out of Go In-Sung. But Go In-Sung was not the main perpetrator; he was just a pawn used by "Sir Boss" as he calls the man who hired him. The stalker had genuinely no idea who he was working for. All of the money was sent through dummy accounts and the numbers came form burn phones.

That meant the actual suspect was rich and obsessed with Kim Sun Hee.

"That's...wow."

The actress gazed blankly ahead, trying to process what she just heard. Hyuk waited for the waterworks to happen.

"Is that so?" she asked again.

Is she going to cry?

She just looked at him and smiled.

"Well, that's a bummer."

What?

"Wait...a bummer? That's it?"

She already took out her phone and started texting God knows who. You would've thought Hyuk just told her that he wasn't able to buy her a face mask or something.

"You're not worried?" he asked her.

Sun Hee put her phone down and looked at him. "Of course I am, but I can't spend all my time worrying," she said, "Don't worry. I'm taking this seriously. Really."

"Aren't you scared?"

What is it with this woman? I tell her that she might have a psycopath of a rich stalker and she lounges there like a cat?

She looked at him with those pretty eyes of her.

"Why should I be? I got you, right?"

"And she wasn't scared at all?"

Hyuk drank one shot of Soju and smacked his lips.

"Nope."

"Huh, weird girl."

His older brother shook his head as he poured another shot for both Hyuk and Soo-Ok, the latter gratefully accepting and turning away to drink. Hyuk, on the other hand, drank the shot without thinking twice, putting the glass on the table.

"I'd be scared if I were her," remarked Ha Neul, chewing some of the grilled beef, "God, a rich stalker with a network of stalkers. And she almost got kidnapped. You still don't have a name?"

"The suspect doesn't know his boss' name, either, Sir," answered Soo Ok, "Whoever it is, he's pretty smart with covering his tracks. Using disposable pawns to get to his prize."

"But he wants to get her. That's what scares me the most."

"You have a point."

Hyuk was still not talking, choosing to busy himself with the noodles and the beef. While his hyung and intern discuss the case, he couldn't help but mull over what Kim Sun Hee said.

"Why should I be? I got you, right?"

That, combined with the memory of the backhug at the hospital, stirred some thoughts in his head. He couldn't point what his exact feelings were. And what was she trying to say?

He knew; he just didn't want to acknowledge it.

"No wonder mothers are eager to lock up their daughters at night," remarked Ha Neul, "This is complete nonsense. Why is he so hooked up on one woman? Granted, she's stunning and all, but the lengths he goes to is enough time to find someone else."

"Well, girls today aren't like before -- at least that's what my mother said," said Soo Ok, "She would always say: 'Ah these 21st century girls -- all wild and no sense of safety. Always up and about. Getting themselves into trouble.' And then she goes into stories of how she maintained her virtue till she married my father."

"So are you saying the obsession is partly Kim Sun Hee's fault? Because she's a 21st century girl?"

"I don't know, but...maybe she did something to prove his desires?" reasoned the hoobae, "Miss Sun Hee isn't like any other girl, but she's that 21st century type my mother would've considered."

"Wild?"

"Free-spirited, I guess," answered Soo-Ok.

Ha Neul looked at the hoobae and poured himself another shot before he turned his attention to his brother.

"What say you about it Hyuk?"

Lee Hyuk missed his brother's question as he was too distracted, still thinking about the mystery that is Kim Sun Hee. His eyes were focused on a group of high school girls seated on a nearby table, laughing heartily over rounds of beef. He was pretty sure they weren't allowed to drink yet, but they were still noisy despite the lack of alcohol.

"Look at those girls. See, this is what proves your mother's theory, Soo-Ok. It's already eleven in the evening and they're still out here."

Before Hyuk could respond, his brother (who was sort of tipsy) turned to the group of girls.

"Hey little girls, shouldn't you all be at home by now?" he asked them, "Don't you know it's dangerous out here?"

The group of high school girls all turned around to face the intruding ajusshi. Hyuk could already see some of them annoyed with his brother's sudden interference.

"We're just celebrating our nearing graduation, Mister," explained the girl in pigtails, "Plus our parents know we're all here!"

There was a cough in the group.

"Well, most of them."

Hyuk noticed many of the girls were probably about his sister's age (or even older). They were looking at his hyung with such judgement (some of them with interest; he secretly wondered if young high school girls had a thing for 30-year olds).

"I'm not being bossy or anything; I'm just saying you guys should be careful!" slurred Ha Neul, "Especially you!" pointing to one of the girls, "Who said you're allowed to wear the kind of lipstick? What if you end up with a stalker?"

"You sound like my father, Mister!"

Hyuk sensed that the girls were getting too antsy with his hyung and that his older brother was probably about to say something stupid. Immediately, he got up and subdued his brother, wrapping an arm around his shoulder.

"I'm sorry; you'll have to forgive my brother, he's just really drunk and concerned," he told them, bowing a little, "But if you knew what we're handling, you would understand."

It only took a few seconds for the girls' expressions of annoyance to transform into one of wonder and awe. Obviously, they were strucked with the Detective's good looks. Hyuk even saw one hastily whisper to her friend and blush. He was used to these types of reactions, but he paid them no mind. In a way, he hoped he could subdue them.

Automatically, they all bashfully bowed at him, giggling and saying that they understood.

Except one.

The girl seated in the end was just staring at him, but none of the girlish giggles or blushes. Unlike her friends (who were obviously nursing a new crush on this calm man), the way she stared almost bothered him.

It was almost as if she recognized him.

Hyuk found himself wondering why she stared in such a way; he already grew deaf to this brother's defenses and the girls' asking him for his number. He racked his brains, trying to remember if he had seen the girl somewhere or if she had seen him. Either way, he came up with a blank, It took him a minute to realize that he was becoming uncomfortable with the staring.

He cleared his throat.

"I'll have to get my hyung away now," he told the girls, "Before he embarasses himself. Now, you girls go home early. We don't want anything happening to you."

"Yes, sir," answered one of the girls, "We will! Thank you!"

"Thank you!" chirped the other girls.

Hyuk bowed at them as he led his brother away, aware of the giggles and excited whispers.

"Did you see that So Min?"

"Ah...yes."

He looked back again. That girl was still staring at him -- almost as if she wanted to say something.

That's odd, he thought.

Without another word, he dragged his brother back to his table where told Soo Ok to get his wallet from his back pocket. The hoobae dutifully followed orders and took money to pay for their meal while Ha Neul slurred about girls staying inside their homes to protect their virtues. As Hyuk brought his brother outside with the help of Soo-Ok, he couldn't help but think of two things:

How he was going to deal with Sun Hee's crazy stalker case?

And who was that girl?

Sun Hee could feel her heart beating twice the normal pace as her brain went into overdrive.

The doctor said she shouldn't stress herself out, but given her situation, she knew that no matter what she did, she would be stressed. When the entire thing was just a simple stalker case, she was already a bit anxious. After all, no one in their right mind would want a stranger trailing them around. But now, it wasn't as simple as she thought.

"You might have on obsessed fan who is rich enough to hire a group of people to stalk you and eventually, kidnap you."

She didn't show her worry when Detective Lee told her. He didn't know that this little piece of information shook her core. He had absolutely no idea that when he relied the details, she was tempted to jump out and run far away.

Sun Hee wasn't sure, but she had a hint.

If she was right, it would make sense.

But it would also be terrible.

Any victim should tell the authorities of their suspicions or hints; it was the right thing to do. Sun Hee knew that.

It wasn't that easy.

Her phone was within her reach. It would be easy to just long-press the number five, hear the ring, and wait for him to answer the phone. It made sense to just tell him her suspicions. He did promise that he would protect her.

But he would know everything.

She bit her lip.

Sun Hee wasn't sure anyway, but she couldn't deny it either.

"You are mine Kim Sun Hee."

A/N: I just listened to Ed Sheeran's Divide album and I have a feeling I'll be using it to inspire the next chapters. To be honest, unlike my SHR fan fic, I don't have a solid direction on the ending. Help me out? :) But don't worry, we'll have a happy one and it's not going to end soon. I'm having too much fun writing about the Grim Reaper and Sunny in this life.

Like this story? Give it an Upvote!
Thank you!

Chapter 40: This is a gem of a story! Your writing drew me into their world. It's so hard to allude subtly yet obviously to Shin and Eun Tak, but you did it with such finesse. The cliffhangers and pacing of the story were perfect. Thank you for this wonderful work! My favourite parts were the conversations Hyuk had with his mysterious friend at the bar who always had hard-boiled eggs ;) So clever.

Chapter 40: I absolutely love this story. I started and just could not stop! It was brilliantly written and all the emotions were portrayed so well. My favourite chapters were definitely when hyuk ans sun hee were confession to each other. Totally gave me butterflies.

And the character connections and how they tied in together were integrated so well!

Looking forward to reading your other stories !
