Chapter Two

Trapped

Wheein entered her apartment building’s lift with a smile on her face. Pressing button number 15, she waited until the lift’s door closed. As soon as she reached the designated floor, she walked down the hall while humming to herself. It took her seconds to reach the front door of her apartment, she was about to enter the secret access code to her apartment when she realised....

“Oh, ...” Wheein mumbled. She just realized that her mother set the secret code and thanks to Hyejin’s sudden appearance, she didn’t pay attention when her mother tell her the secret code. Wheein quickly pulled out her cell phone from her pocket.  “Oh, ...” she mumbled again when she realized that her cellphone ran out of battery. Clicking her tongue, she started rummaging through her bag, and then whinned to herself when she couldn’t find the thing that she looked for to restart her phone in every part of her bag.

A woman in a black coat and carrying a backpack on her back walked was walking toward her direction. Seeing that there was someone that could safe her from this situation, she raised her hand and opened to call out to the woman. Yet, she hadn’t had the chance to even utter a single word, the woman with silver coloured hair already by passed her with even glancing at her. she stopped in front of the apartment door right next to Wheein’s apartment and seemed about to enter the secret code to her door. Taking a deep breath, she gathered all of her courage to walk to the woman right in front of her.

“저… 저기요,” (‘jeogiyo’ excuse me) said Wheein, already standing beside the woman nervously.

Wheein waited until the woman looked her way and gave her a shy smile, “Can I go into your apartment for a while to charge my cellphone?” she asked her carefully, receiving no answer, she quickly added, “Ngg, my cellphone batere drained and I just moved to the apartment next door,” she explained while pointing at her apartment door. “Because I have things to do,  I let my mom set the secret code,” her lips closed as she gulped before continuing, “But, I dont remember the secret code....” she said with an innocent face.

Moonbyul silently looked into Wheein’s eyes. Not sure why, but there was a tug in her heart to help the woman in front of her. “Come in,” she said as she entered her apartment.

Wheein followed the owner of the apartment to her living room, she looked around every corner of the apartment belonging to the woman that she just met. The wall was painted white, free of any kind of decorations, just white plain wall, it just seemed hollow to her.

“You could plug your charger there.” Said the apartment’s owner while pointing at an electric socket in one corner of the room, bringing Wheein’s back from her own thoughts.

“Ah, but I didn’t bring my charger.” Said Wheein sadly.

Without a word, the woman walked into her bedroom, and within mere seconds gave Wheein a phone charger.

Wheein took the charger from the stoic woman’s hand. Mumbling a thank you, she walked into the appointed corner and plugged the charger in. Wheein stood there, waiting for her phone to restart while sneaking glances at the apartment owner, now already sitting on the couch while playing with her own phone.

Minutes lapsed and Wheein’s phone finally functioning again, she quickly pressed speed dial 1 putting her directly through her mom’s contact. She put the small object to her ear and waited for her mother to answer her phone from the other side.

“왜?” (‘wae’ why?) asked her mom as soon as she answered the call from her beloved daughter.

“Eomma, what’s the secret code to my apartment?” asked Wheein kind of afraid. Knowing that her mother would start nagging at her, Wheein distanced the phone away from her ear, however, her mother’s voice still can be heard.

“미안해” (‘mianhae’ sorry) she said after her mother finished her rant.

“Tsk. The secret code is  천사” (‘cheonsa’ literally means ‘angel’, but could also means  1004, 천 = 100 사 = 4)

After knowing the secret code to her own apartment, Wheein thanked her mother with a promise not to be careless again. She ended the call and plugged out the charger, walking toward the woman who was still immersed in whatever activity she was doing on her phone, “Excuse me, I’m done.” Said Wheein while smiling sweetly.

The woman looked over to Wheein and nodded her head before standing up and showed Wheein to the door, again without uttering even a word.

Wheein put her shoes back on and was about to walk out when she suddenly turned around and offer the woman her hand, “I’m Jung Wheein,” she said while giving the other woman her best smile, a deep dimple showing up on her cheek.

Mesmerized by the smile, her eyes lingered on Wheein’s face even when her own hand reached out to grasp Wheein’s hand and said, “Moon Byul Yi.”

“Let’s be a good friend Moon Byul Yi, see ya,” Wheein gave her another sweet smile, leaving a stunned Moonbyul standing there by the door.

The room was buzzing with the sounds of chatters among the university students enjoying their lunch. Almost all of the university students on that room sat within group, only Moonbyul who sat by herself at the corner of the room. Her right hand gripping the chopstick that she used to put food into while her left hand holding onto her phone. Is it him? Asked Moonbyul silently while her eyes glued to her phone which showed a profile of a new professor on the university, Eric Nam.

Wheein just entered the room alongside Hyejin when she saw Moonbyul, the silver haired woman that lived next to her apartment, “Moon Byul Yi.” She said with a shocked expression.

Hyejin, hearing her best friend suddenly mentioned a familar name, quickly turned her head toward Wheein, and then to Moonbyul, and back to Wheein again, “You know Moon Byul Yi!?” she asked interested.

“Yes, she’s the one that I just told you about, then one that lived next to my apartment and let me charged my phone at her apartment yesterday.” Said Wheein without taking her eyes off of Moonbyul.

“헐 (‘heol’ shocked expression), no way,”

“Why? Is she also a student here?” asked Wheein after turning around to face Hyejin again. They were now in a quite long quequ.

“Moon Byul Yi. She was famous for being the Queen of Introvert in our university. Just like us, she also in her last semester for Astronomy major.” Explained Hyejin in a serious tone.

Wheein tilted her head, a frown appeared between her brows, a sign that she was confused.

“She transferred here after you went to USA. She’s a transfer student from Switzerland. No one seemed to know anything about her and she’s always by herself. Refusing to talk to anyone.”

“Really? But yesterday she was really nice to me, even telling me her name.” Said Wheein while looking over to where Moonbyul at again, just to see that Moonbyul already vacanted her seat and walking out.

Moon Byul Yi walked alone in the deserted campus hall. It was already late at night, there were no more classes and all of the students already went home to their own houses. Moonbyul saw a shadow of a man disappeared around the corner. She quickened her steps toward the corner and instantly stopped when she saw a familiar woman, Jung Whee In, stepped out from the library. Their eyes met. She cant be involved in this. She walked toward Wheein.

“Oh! Hi, Moon Byul Yi, right? you also study here?” asked Wheein although she already knew the answer.

Moonbyul nodded her head as if saying yes, “Why are you here?” she asked.

“Ah, I just got back from a two years student exchange in USA. I study here, astronomy major, I...”  Wheein didnt get to finish her words when Moonbyul cut her words.

“Lets go home together.”

“Huh?” confusion written all over Wheein’s face.

“Now.”
