For thousands of years, the world has lived in peace. Many believe it is becuase of the Avatar, able to bend all four elements and to keep balance in the world. Sora, a resident of the Southern Water Tribe, has been born as the new Avatar and she soon finds it to be a bit...unexciting. 

Sure, she can learn to master the four elements and travel the world, but she didn't see the point. There was no war. The world was at peace. And while she never admitted it out loud, she sometimes wished for something to happen where she would be needed to become the world's hero. 

But you should always be careful of what you wish for.
