Rustbelt Regional Poetry Slam 2013

Foreword

I met her nearly four years ago. Heavy rain, flooded streets, dark skies, loud sharp thunder and lightning, rain crashed deafeningly on the roof.

“I can’t breathe.” My head feels heavy. I’m having cold sweats. My heart’s beating fast. My hands are trembling. It won’t stop.

“I should be home by now. It’s almost six in the evening. I should be home. I should be home. Ten minutes. No. I need to go home. Mario, where are you?” I’m starting to get upset.

“I need to go home. Mario. Mario. Mario. Mario.” My whole body is shaking badly.

“No. No. Five minutes. I need to go.” I forced myself to stand up; I started walking towards the door then it suddenly open.

A strong gust of wind blew inside. A small girl drenched in rain, her white dress soaked and clinging to her skin. Her long brown hair hung wet and draped across her face. She lifted her head; her eyes were of a deep brown hue. I stared at her. Everything inside me went quiet. The constant dark thoughts and images in my head just disappeared. Her lips curled into a smile, her eyes disappearing altogether. She smiled at me. There’s an eyelash on her cheek.

“There’s an eyelash on your cheek.” I told her. I kept repeating it. She removed it and smiled at me again.

She went towards the table near the window; she started drying herself with her handkerchief. I knew I had to talk to her.

I asked her name. I asked her name six times in thirty seconds. She smiled at me. Aom. Her name is Aom Sushar Manaying.

I saw her again the next day. I asked her out. I asked her out six times in thirty seconds. She said yes after the third one but I need to ask her again. I need to.

On our first date, I spent my time just separating the peas and carrots, cutting the steak in ten evenly pieces and wiping the spoon four times. She just smiled at me. She talked to me. She asked me about myself.

She loved me.

We were together for more than three years. She never got tired of taking care of me. She never got tired. She never stopped loving me. She never stopped.

She was happy. She was happy.

Was.
