Aren't You Tired?
Description
Jung Soojung held her breath as she climbed onto the railings of Mapo Bridge. Waving one trembling foot in the air, she closed her eyes and prepared to take both of her feet off of the bridge.
"Aren't you tired?" A plain voice asked her, preventing her from jumping. Three words and her body froze.
Foreword
All of the blinking lights flashed in her eyes, some of them were from the passing cars honking as they sped by and some were blinking from the sturdy bridge. Walking towards the edge, Jung Soojung breathed out. She looked around and examined all of the hangul printed boldly on the edges: "Your worries will feel like nothing when you get older", "The most shining moment of your life has yet to come" and "A difficult moment will eventually flow like the river below.” They're all lies. They're all meaningless. They're written by careless adults trying to act as if they know everything. Thoughts ran back and forth in Soojung’s head making her dizzy.
Within a second, she grasped the cold, metal bar and hopped on, standing up to feel the cold, Seoul breeze send chills down her spine. She felt her thin clothes flap in the wind as she closed her eyes and processed what she was about to do:
I hate school. I hate my parents. I hate my sister. I hate my grades. I hate my friends. I hate all of this. I hate the fact that I'm on this bridge. I hate that I'm going to jump. I hate myself. I hate you, Jung Soojung.
By this time that she had declared her hatred for everyone and everything, she had a tear running down her cheek which she quickly wiped off; trying to convince herself that she wasn't afraid or upset. Exhaling, she lifted one foot off the bridge and waved it in the air, looking at the glistening black water below. She put it back in its place and did the same with her other foot. Suddenly both of her cheeks were wet as she squatted slightly, getting ready to leap off. Count to three, it'll be much easier. She furiously nodded as she began the count down in her head. One. Everything will be fine. Two. You won't regret this. Three. It's going to be eas-
"Aren't you tired?" Three sudden words interrupted her countdown.
Suddenly all of her anxiety flooded in and collapsed off the bridge onto the pavement side. Composing her and leaning her heavy body against the bridge, breaking down mentally and physically. Looking up, she saw a blurry boy with short black hair in casual clothes staring down back at her.
"I'm tired." She sobbed, screaming. "I'm so ing tired!"
The corners of his lips were turned upright as he lazily replied, "Then go home, idiot." With those words, he left the wreck of a girl on the roadside by herself.
