Foreword

Hello everyone! This is the first day of my Korea adventure. At last I was here in Seoul in a very little apartment all by myself. But it was close to my school which was comforting me very fully. So Seoul is what I expected. Okay men can be a little more harsh but still It's very very eye dazzling and it makes you feel that you are above the clouds if you can see it between skyscrapers. First Day The Bump After I placed everything in apartment I went outside for lunch. Streets were bright full of people but still there was an acrid loneliness in people I saw. As I walked I searched for one of those little markets in dramas I've seen and found one. But I thought I wasn't going to be satisfied just with ramen and some banana milk or rice cake. So I looked for usual Korean restaurant or street food stands which were very satisfying. I picked some place which seemed so nice and comfy but very busy and crowded. I stepped inside and as I stepped I could hear everyone slurping. Another comforting thing I liked about Koreans. I knew a very little Korean by the way and I kept my phone and guide book by my side for any misunderstanding. People were talking loud and drinking joyfully or just eating their dishes. But there was no one alone. So I should sit with someone I don't know. I tried to pick a younger person because I was a little nervous if someone tries to talk to me and I can't say anything. By the way I can not know that younger one know English but I sit whit the one's permission to sit opposite to him. He just shook his head and ate his dish. Then I look at the menu and what the others eating. I picked some random dishes I wanted to taste and it was more cheaper than I expected. I tried to order but couldn't figure out how i will do it. Should I shout at the woman behind the counter or get up and tell her? Then I looked the peer in front of me. He looked at me after a few seconds with a little careless hesitation. "Can you speak english?" I asked him and he nodded. So he couldn't. "Yes." He said and left his chopsticks on table. He was actually more older than me I could tell after a few more glances. "Oh thank God. So should I shout for order or how can I order?" "What do you want?" He said calm. He was that type of cool guy which was unusual for me but it was not making me feel bad. "Tteokbokki and jajangmyeon." I said. He seemed surprised and leaned a little. "I prefer you to eat tteokbokki from street." He said. "But jajangmyeon is a very great choice I should say." He was speaking very fluently but in a little Korean accent in it. I thought a little and gave up on my choice. He ordered the jajang for me and went on his meal. I thanked him and looked around. I thought we can talk more but I knew that Koreans are not so warm if they don't know a person. But my prejudices have been rocked by his words. "So where are you from?" He asked. "Canada." I said and smiled. There was a sympathy on his face. Maybe he like Canada I thought. "How can I call you? If I'm going further just warn me." He said then. "No no. It's Min." I said. He seemed surprised again. "Min?" He asked for being sure. "Yes. Min." I said and smiled a little. "I am Yong-sun." He said. We were informal and it felt good because I didn't have much information about it. Then he finished his soup and made some noise of satisfaction. "How old are you?" He asked. "Twenty." I said and he chuckled a little. "Sorry. I thought you were in high school." He said. "So you?" I asked and he stopped. He couldn't understand me I thought and asked again. Then he replied. "Twenty five." He said. "Should I call you o-" "No, no." He laughed. I felt relaxed and smiled. Then my dish came and he got up. I felt a little upset and also got up unknowingly. "Oh you can sit. I'm just going to toilet." He said. My face flushed and I faked a smile then I sit down. I looked after a few seconds behind him and saw him looking at me. Then I asked myself, how could I trust him awkwardly? I mean, there was nothing to trust. It's stupid. Also it's not like me. Then I checked my bag and my phone. Everything was there but when he came I think he understood what I was doing really. "What are you looking for?" He said and sit down. "My phone." I said and he extended me my phone which was on the table and I knew it. "Are you blind?" He asked uncomfortably. "Yes." I said and pretended that I was checking on something. "Oh, by the way, I'm still in university. In Seoul Uni." He said. I looked at him and be sure that he was not lying. "Me too." I said and put my phone back onto its place. "Well then, we'll see each other very often." He smiled. He was not like a Korean and this was concerning me. I wanted to ask him but it seemed so nonsense. I agreed with him and shook my head after his words and ate my dish. "So if you are still hungry I can show you the best tteokbokki place." He said. I lifted my head and looked at him. He was smiling. "Oh, of course." I said and drunk my soju. He was looking at me awkwardly empathizing. I ate all of my meal in uncomfortable silence and he kept looking around and his phone. Then I heard the message alert and he opened it. I finished my dish and drunk all of my soju. Then I noticed that he was looking at me and soju. "Oh, do you want to finish it? I'm full." I said extending the soju. "No thanks. But are you all right?" He asked. Actually the drink did not have an effect on me. "Yes. Why?" I asked. He giggled and took the soju in my hand. "Because this is a little strong drink. It will affect you later. So I suggest you to drink water and coffee." He said. "Oh no, not really. I've drunk so many things and this is not that strong I guess." I said and I was telling the truth. "Okay then. " He said and left 9.000 won on the table. Then I took my wallet and left 6.000 won. I wonder how much he ate. Then suddenly he took my money and gave it to me. "Hey, you are not paying." He said and shook his hand to the woman behind the counter of letting her know that the money's on the table. "But I can-" "Just do as I say." He said suspiciously. What was that I thought and did as he said. Then he got up and went ahead and I followed him. It was getting darker and I thought I should buy somethings for my late dinner and told him about it. "Do you want to go to a market or street food is enough?" He asked. He was unreasonably sincere and I was getting more suspicious. I stopped walking and turned to him slowly. I could not know how he react what I will say. "Umm… Why are you so friendly?" I asked. He smiled and giggled. "It's unusual for me but I felt that I need to help you. I'm also a student and you're foreigner. Right?" He asked leaning a little but we were still far. "Yes but-" "I don't have any intention is bad. But if I make you feel uncomfortable I can show you the place and then I can leave." He said and walked again. My head fell and I looked behind him. He was walking slow for me to keep up with him. I ran to him and explained him about my worries and I was not expecting a person like him. He understood at last when we came to a street food stand. He ordered in Korean and woman fill the plastic cups with tteokbokki. "Oh, it's hot!" I said out of my mouth. He laughed and we walked again. "Did you like it?" He asked and I shook my head in reply. "I'm glad that you like it." He said and sniffed. Then he looked at the sky. "It's getting late." "Yes." I said and ate a few forks of my food. "Actually this is getting better when you keep on eating." I said and smiled. He throw his cup in a bin and bit his lip. "Yes it is. Oh, you wanted to go to the market." He said and pointed somewhere a little far. "There it is." He said and came to me. I was eating tteokbokki very beastly I can say because it was really good and spicy. So I was eating fast to not taste the spiciness. "Wow, you are eating fast. Slow down." He said smiling fully. I stopped and wiped my mouth. "Oh, sorry. It's so spicy." I said. "I can finish it if you want." He said and I gave him the cup hesitating. "Thanks." He said and started to walk. Also I walked and wanted to ask him about what was he studying. "So what are you studying in uni?" I asked. He finished his morsel and swallowed. "Cinema. It's very popular here as you know. I won't starve." He said and smiled again. "You?" Then he asked. "Me too." I said and he stopped eating immediately. "Really?" He was very surprised. Then he laughed and looked the sky and then looked back at me. "This is certainly fate." He said. "What?" I asked. "This is not a coincidence. You are lucky I guess." He said and ate from the tteokbokki. "So you say, we met each other because of fate." "Or you are very lucky." He said correcting me. But he clearly made his point. "Okay, fate." I said. He looked at me and I looked at him. Okay he was more better looking for normal Koreans and he was very friendly. I felt comfortable and I felt like I was at home. We've arrived at the market already while I was thinking about him and Korea. He opened the door and showed some of his favorite foods and drinks so I bought some of them. Then I bought five different ramens and he was a little shocked about it. "Are you going to eat just ramen at nights?" He asked. "Oh, I think I will." I said and left them on the desk. He bought a little bottle. "It's for headaches." He said and turned to me, "Do you want?" He asked. I tilted my head and looked at the bottle. Then I bought it and left it on the desk. He talked to the cashier and it completed without any problem. "Thank you for everything you did today by the way." I said and my head fell a little because of my embarrassment. "Nothing to mention. It was a good day for me too." He said. "What? I thought you are out of money because of me." I said comfortably. "Of course it was." He said and laughed. Then suddenly he stopped and held my shoulder. "I'm joking you know right?" He asked. I stopped because of his behavior but in a good way and shook my head. "Okay I'm relieved." He said and drunk the bottle he bought. He made a noise of its sourness. Then I looked at him. "Umm… Would you like to-" "I added you on kakao by the way." He said like he knew what I wanted to say. "Oh okay. I'm glad that we can talk more." I said awkwardly.
