to make a story that can easily catch a reader's attention, you HAVE to plan your story out carefully. I don't recommend you writing with no planning whatsoever unless you are very, very experienced with writing. Start off general like write down the main events that will happen then write the events that will lead up to the pivotal moment for every chapter. it's alright if you go slightly off course when writing the chapters; as long as they are not major events that can change the whole plot line. Make sure that you do not leave large plot holes in your story because that will make it seem that the story is poorly planned and written.

You should write every single detail about your character (what they like, personality, habits). Jot down some notes about their past which made them into the character they are now.

Describe your characters through actions, not just adjectives/adverbs. Write like Ernest Hemingway lol When you outright describe them like, "he's disgruntled," it erases content and also the readers' interest. It's nice to let the readers try to think what the characters are feeling. Maybe keep the characters a mystery

well, generally, you should avoid things that make people bored. don't make characters that don't have any attitude or nature. if you make your characters edgy, people will be more interested in them (whether negative or positive) nobody wants to read about characters that are boring. or... maybe some do. well most don't so.
