write vs talk

Have you ever encounter a situation where you feel like you are very good at writingin English, but when it comes to speaking in front of people, you tremble like hell. Any tips to overcome this? I really want to have the confidence talking in front of people without feeling too nervous until my grammar went into a mess. Helppp

As a native English speaker, I'd recommend focusing on what you want to say and go from there. Being calm and knowing what you want to say will help. Trust me, I had to use my limited Korean skills before and I was freaking out about what the person would think of me. It turns out that she just smiled and asked me if I knew Korean. So try not to think about what the person/person you're talking with will think.

@chanyu61_ I mean, you are trying to put effort into speaking English, people at my school overuse slang and their words are hard to understand.

I think your problem is not talking in English but stage fright or social anxiety. My problem too. If yoi don't talk much, I guess you should start there. Practice communicating first, maybe you can even converse in English to hit two birds with one stone? When I speak in front of an audience, like reporting in class or something, I speak as loud as I can, so to release the tension. I also try not to focus rye contacts with one specific person, my eyes scan the room from time to time to kinda keep the listeners involved, then I look at the wall or ceiling to regain my composure, and then scan the room again. I hope I helped address your problem, and good luck!

@chanyu61_ Grammar is not that important when you are speaking, honestly, you should focus more of learning English slang. XD

@chanyu61_ yes, same! i just get so nervous. it takes a long time adapting to a different language. I mostly speak english with people im comfortable with, so that´s something else, but practice is important ye. I was at a part-time job once, i was learning the ropes and this person told me that even if she has a presentation in front of over 100 people every week, she still feels nervous, but she also said that it gets better with time. I hope so at least. good luck with your english though

@cookiehyung Oh god. I am totally the type of thinking too much. So glad you say it out to me. Only now I realise I should not be doing that since overthinking is the biggest distraction ever. Thank you :))

@Uunbiiyan Yes. I could not agree more. I would try to be more open-minded and learn from my mistakes. Thank you for helping :)

@Oreoyumyum304 I do find that watching movies really helps to speak English better. So far I think I am quite okay with my pronunciation,it's just I'm having a hard time with my grammar. Oh btw I am also afraid to speak in front of ppl using my native language. Pardon my social anxiety xD

@celestialtae I think I had a hard time to relax too. There were times when I went too confident, until I was out of breath when I was talking and people in front of me was like "cool down mate. Slowly. Inhale. Exhale." But I think maybe just like you say, practice make perfect too. I do actually sometimes talk to myself in english, but it was all okay because I'm talking to myself and nobody was around. But when it comes to talk in front of people, like talking to your lecturers, giving speech or doing a roleplay in class, everything went....... haha

I get A´s in when writing in english but C´s when speaking in english, which , big time. ive always taken pride in my english skills but when it comes to actually speaking in english, i just can´t. Plus, i tend to turn my L´s into R´s and it always makes thing embarrassing for me.
My cousin is American so when we converse it takes me a good 20 minutes before i´ve relaxed enough to speak the way I want to. I know it´s hard to relax, but making a habit of speaking english with yourself has helped me. You may look weird talking to yourself but we all do it sometimes. The key is to relax, and it´s hard, but speech doesn´t come easy. I hope this helped!

I am a native English speaker, I still am afraid of speaking my own native language since I have a hard time with speech. I would not judge you, but I will correct you on pronunciations to help you better your English skills. I would reccommend watching a lot of shows in English to help you with basic conversations. I am currently learning Swedish and afraid of speaking Swedish, but I am working to get past this fear. This guy
amazes me a lot, so I would check this video out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km9-DiFaxpU

As someone that suffers from social anxiety I kind of understand how you feel. But the best way that I've found to get used to talking is to just do it. And honestly nobody is really going to care if your english isn't the best. They'll probably just correct you if you make a mistake, which is the best thing for you. I know that that can also be a terrifying thing to deal with, you start overthinking about your mistake and get embarrassed and want to never speak again. But hopefully it can help to boost your confidence because then you would know the correct way to say something and won't worry about that particular thing.

Ugh I hope I phrased this well and it could help you. I just wanted to share my experience (not about trying to speak english obviously) because I know speaking can be a difficult thing for some people no matter what their reason is. But just go for it and you'll find that it's not as bad as you thought it was (: Good luck!!

Totally me, but if you don't think too much you can actually speak very well. Trust yourself. But if you're one of the type that rarely speaks english then try to speak with your friends, sometimes speak in english with yourself and make sure to speak in english in your mind too. Just treat english like your own mother tongue. You can do it. Fighting!
