Do you prefer established relationships or relationship build-up more?

And any reasons why?

I prefer build up relationships for the first part (like, how they meet, the hardships they go through and all of that stuff) and for the second half established relationships and what happens then, even though I tend to stop reafing a story when it gets too draggy and cheesy (especially for established relationships), idk, it's just not my thing, that's why I usually like the first half of a story better than the second one.

I like established relationships! I don't really have the time anymore to read multi-chaptered fanfictions so I turn to oneshots to give me that daily dose of fluff that I need and established relationships in a domestic setting are the BEST!!! Unless if it's a singleparent!au wherein they both have children and they come together as a couple -- one of the cutest things ever!! But yeah, established relationships are basically what I live for at the moment.

I personally like build up more, just because I'm the type of person who always wonders 'how did this happen?' but obviously its good to have both.

when build-ups are written really well, i love them! my heart flutters and i get SO excited and augh! established relationships, for me, work much better for drabbles/oneshots, while build-ups are preferable in a longer story.

I actually read both. I like the domestic aspect of having an established relationship so that cute and fluffy (and sometimes LOL) stories can be made. Build up is also good too if it's something like a School! AU or something like that. I like both of them, honestly, and i have no preference!

i like both but i typically read build ups more;; i enjoy seeing other people's viewpoint of how relationships work/how people can interact upon first or even multiple meetings if that makes any sense

It really depend on the plot. Romance story tend to have more the build-up type while other genres can go for established. Sometimes it's better to have a mix of both in a story. I am a slow burn type of writer, especially for romance, so I tend to have a build-up and along somewhere, my background characters will have some established relationship. I think it's a good formula for all type of stories, but for fluffy light-heart romance, go for build-up. Mystery and angst, better to go for established.

Also, in the case of friendship, I don't mind either one either. Like I said, it all depends on what's the focus of the story and who the focus is one, stuff like that. But both have their pluses.

That's a good question. I don't really know. I don't think I mind either one, and each one can be nice depending on the circumstances. Like, I think establish ones can be just as nice & fun as a build-up, and I actually wanna include some myself in some stories. I think like, for establish ones, it'd probably work out really well in a story where the focus isn't necessarily on the couple or whatever. Like, for me, I really like using many different characters for some stories, so already having like two of them together from the gecko could be cool, while the focus is on them plus the other main characters. Or, the established relationship can be like the side characters or something. Then, with something like a build-up, that seems more like something I'd imagine would be more focused on when those two are like the biggest main roles, or if one of the main focus points of your story is the two getting together.

Both are fine, like I said. Though for me, I'm not super about the romance, so I guess I might think established ones are more awesome, even by just a little bit.

It depends. If it's a relationship build up, then that's what the plot of the story will focus on. However, if two people are already in a relationship, then that leaves more room for the plot, such as cheating.

I agree with the person below and I prefer a build-up relationship for the same reasons. I think it brings a sense of character development and bonding for the characters (whether it's a love relationship or a friendship) and it's great to see how characters interact with each other. It's really nice to see how characters change around each other and how they change together too. Like the person below has said, it kinda feels like I am being thrown in the middle of something, but then again, it all depends on how well something is written- if the relationship is explored well or it is meant so that the reader feels like they're missing out on their past relationship, I think an already established relationship could be as good as a built-up relationship. Personally it's just really fun to see how the characters grow with one another.

For me, personally, I like relationship build-up more and prefer to read or write stories that build up to a relationship instead of one already existing. When characters are already in an established relationship in a story I'm reading, I feel as if I was thrown into the middle of a story and not at the beginning. As a writer, I feel like a lot of potential can come into the time frame of the characters meeting to when they actually begin a relationship. You can create a lot of sweet, silly, romantic scenes that shows what actually made the characters fall for each other. Just starting a story with the characters already in a relationship, you don't get to see the purest and sweetest stage of a relationship which is two people falling for each other and knowing that they want to be with each other.
