Authors & Readers

As an author here on AFF, I have noticed that not many readers tend to comment on our stories.

Many authors tell you that comments = faster updates and it’s actually true. Since we don’t have a lot of time on our hands, we tend to forget our stories and carry on with life as normal. Comments remind us that people are still reading and that we still have followers who are interested in us so please comment when you can to remind us that we still need to update! :D :D

I hope people will keep supporting us authors who write and drop us a comment! They always cheer us on especially since we’re so busy.

Please don't think that we're just hungry for comments since they are more of an emotional support than anything. :)

"Please don't think that we're just hungry for comments since they are more of an emotional support than anything. :)" oh my gosh this is just so fcking accurate!!!! T_T it really does brighten up my day if someone actually take their time to actually give a comment on my stories <33

I love when people comment on my stories. It feels like "Wow, someone actually reads and responses to my story. He/she actually enjoys and appreciates the effort I put to write the story." But, I'm not the type to forget my story. If I don't update for months, I probably intentionally abandon it for personal reason XD

And yeah, fellow readers! Keep the comments coming in! :DD

I like it when someone comments my story, I feel like they read it and liked it. What I don't like is when they ask what the story was about u,u Then I feel like did they even read it or just scrolled down and many of my stories are based on my personal life, some more, so I sometimes write as I know stuff but I don't always remember not everyone is me :'D

It's true that comments motivate us a lot, that's why I think we have to thank them by actually interacting with them. I always try to joke around or start small conversation with my readers who commented, even if I can't keep track of all the replies, but at least they know that I take my time to reply their comments just like how they take their time commenting and reading my story. It's basically a give and take between authors and readers!

This is so true! But not the 'update please' comment though.. it's somewhat irritating

Based on my experience, the way to have readers comment on your stories is by replying their comments, ALL of them, even the short ones like "omggg" or "aww hahaha". Readers will come back to talk to you if they feel appreciated seeing you replying to their comments, even if you say that you read all comments and love them, but it feels like one-way conversation if you didn't reply to their comments.

this is so true i can't disagree, that's why i comment on every story i read! and hope that people comment on stories i write.
when you don't get any feedback, doesn't it kind of discouraged you?

@KaihleeLo yes true true. ^^ hopefully a lot of writers and readers will see both sides of it.

@YouWillFly Exactly! It has to be both ways otherwise it's not right for authors to ask for feedback >_<

@damnationSUruck aww thanks. ^^
this opinion of mine came from years of being a silent reader, then replying to chapters when author asked for feedback, and eventually writing my own and understanding their point of view since then. lol

@YouWillFly You took the words right out of my mouth. I share the same philosophy. Completely agreed, and I suggest all writers read this!

I lose a lot of motivation when I hardly get comments, like I wrote a 8k chapter this week and barely anyone commented...I was a bit disappointed, actually no, I was REALLY disappointed.... ;( I'm going to seek for a creative way to ask for comments, because my silent readers are getting out of hand...

commenting helps that it gives feedbacks.
but also replying back to those comments also help readers to know that their input/message has been acknowledged as well.
so it has to work both ways.
but then again, you also have to enjoy writing the story you like regardless of comments or not.
i tend to write for my own pleasure and enjoyment and when the motivation hits me because i find that if i don't like it as i'm writing, then i'm not going to continue it because it doesn't motivate me.

@sheeiinewrites I completely agree with you. I don't understand people that write for anyone other than themselves. If you don't like the story, then what's the point of writing it?

seeing that I'm not a well known writer. comments are very appreciated. But I continue to write regardless of whether I get comments or not. I appreciate the views more than anything because I know I have my readers at least interested enough to keep reading

I'm completely down for comments and try to encourage my readers to comment, but to forget about your story because of lack of comments means that you don't care that much for it. Even if my new story as a whole gets 100 or even 4 views, I'm still going to keep going because I love what I'm writing. Now, I'm not degrading anyone, I just believe that people should write for themselves and because they want to and not for others.

This is exactly why I started up the #mm2k17 challenge (http://www.asianfanfics.com/blog/view/1185224).

However, it does also have to be said that while comments are many authors' writing lifeblood, a lot of authors are terrible at replying to them, and readers get put off when authors don't bother replying to comments. It's worth replying to comments too! Many readers will happily comment again if you reply to them the first time :)
