What do you wish authors researched more when it comes to fanfics?

And it can be anything~

just everything, one that i recently read and bothers me is about reincarnation, i learned something about it and seems like the author didn't know anything other than people who died is born again.
but there is also one story about reincarnation that's still ongoing, which is a really good example of well researched story in my opinion.
if you don't mind reading boyxboy story i'd like to recommend it here! (it's a markjin story)

[I should warn, my points are adult-related!]

Everything. Authors should research (or simply said, just at least google it duhh) about whatever they are going to write about in their story. One thing I don't really favor over here is the , or any ual scenes. I'm sure we all know that most writers here are in high school and I'm pretty sure to ask them to do research about sounds wrong in many ways. Why do they even need the unnecessary in the fanfics anyway? Some stories are already fine without the cringey scenes. The stereotypical description of the ia, the ridiculous positions, the three-deep-s-then--and-it-all-happens-in-less-than-a-minute thing, the place of the action (like seriously, INFIRMARY OF KOREAN HIGH SCHOOL?), etc. I assume some authors here might learn a thing or two about from other fanfics and use them to write their own. It's hard to find a story with good and realistic ual scenes over here but I can't blame anyone about that tho.

P.S: Two characters ing together always make me laugh. idk. it just seems funny imagining it to me. plus, when they moan together doing that XD

@hocbaidi This actually doesn't seem unrealistic. Speaking about depression or wanting to self-harm, etc is difficult for some and instead of revealing it to others (because of said stigma that one will be judged and potentially ridiculed), choose to keep it shut in.

I don't know much about mental illnesses/ disorders either, but I have been reading this one ff that the OC has issues and somehow found it unrealistic.
The girl is under a heavy depression and she needs to take pills or else she will grow insane and self-harm herself. She attempts to commit suicide many times, too.
But then she begins to act pretty much the same as every out-going, grumpy OCs out there. It seems off to me, at least

animals!!!! lots of authos put in animals/pets without researching a single thing!!!!! i see a lot mistakes with rabbits/cats. rabbits require intensive care, you can't keep one rabbit (they can die of loneliness so only keeping one is considered animals abuuse), and you can definitely NOT feed them carrots!!!! cats cant have human prepared tuna (only special for cats) and adult cats cant have milk (they become lactose intolerant)!!!! to me its so irritating when authors just add in pets for the sake of having a quirky line or to pass a scene!!! adding a pet means a lot more than just having a pet. it should impact your characters life, or at least have some significant role.

As it was mentioned before, anything related to illnesses and diseases. Especially there needs to be done intensive research. I'd do the same if I decided to bring in a character - and be it a side character - having health problems. It should be comprehensible and respectful and in analog tot hat maybe even help readers understand people who actually live with those. Abuse as well (physical+mental). How it can affect a person in actions and thinking. It's a touchy subject and needs careful approach. When it comes to historical fics nothings more important than to gather knowledge on the time, the speech, people's mentality, the culture, even politics; cause politics influence people's behaviour towards strangers. I find nothing more horrible than seeing modern terms/behaviour appearing in historical fics. That also counts for fantasy fics based on only historic settings. The same goes for modern going fics. Culture research is the A and O. Stereotypes are one of the worst things that could happen. While there are some stereotypes that apply to reality it should be carefully differentiated which. Religion is the best example. I haven't read many fics where religion plays a role but when then it's full of stereotypes as well. All in all, before one starts a fic research should be done and detailed thinking.

Mental illnesses, definitely...because a lot of them are extremely misrepresented on here. I don't think people should be writing about certain mental illnesses unless they've had close experience with it. Physical illnesses/body anatomy also need to be researched. Historical fiction needs to be researched, including correct dialogue to use, culture, etc. especially if it's set in a country you're not already familiar with

@Kai-chan I totally agree with this on diseases, both physical and mental.

Getting hit on the head won't cure amnesia, a good boyfriend sure as heck won't cure depression, etc.

I have this small pet peeves(?) when I read writers write Korean school system like their country. Mostly this occurred to Westerners writer. Korean (or Asian) students rarely change classes because they already have permanent class to stay (except PE, going to lab, music room etc). Most of Asian school don't have locker but in Japan and Korea they do have shoe lockers. They will change to another shoe when they entering the school building. While searching to write for my fic I just found out that they didn't have recess time. They usually take 10-15 minutes in between each period so they will use that time eat and what not. That's quite shocking for me. Hahaha and it definitely kinda messed up my plot too.. So I have to explain that I change the school system a bit ><

Settings, or anything that is ground to reality. In the sense that if you're going to write a story that take place in a certain country, with a desert landscape, make sure you research the culture, avoid stereotyping and the least an author could do is to make sure everything is plausible.

@Yeoniebb42 The weirdest experience for me reading a historical fiction would be seeing certain words like "Okay" and words that are so modern, it could break the flow of the story, but that's my opinion.

I basically agree with everything MissMinew wrote, especially the medical aspects of a fic; wounds, illnesses (mental or physical), everything. It's too lazy for 'writers' to just say, nah, no research, it. Please put some effort into it :') My writing isn't perfect, certainly not, but I do my best to research the stuff I write about, be it or gun wounds.

Research is vital for a good fic!

Everything.
Everything medical, seriously. Do not ever write a story if you don't know what disease you're writing or how the medical customs are. Don't write a story if you're too lazy to figure out what the healthcare professional doing the task you want them to do is called. (Yes, seriously, make sure that you know that it's not nurses that take x-rays, thank you pls.) Don't fall into FDD, FDD is a sinner and it has to go. Don't write any mental disorders if you're too lazy to research. Don't write anything medical if all you know is stereotypes.
Research your kinks and your . Please. Don't misrepresent the kinks, seriously. Don't write stupid -fails because you've never had and don't know. Please research positions too or just ... idk, man, sometimes people try positions and I keep thinking "that is humanly impossible unless we're dealing with like a gymnast with extreme flexibility" T__T
If you're writing realistic, research literally every aspect of the thing you're writing. Research relationships (like, you don't have to read but pls be realistic about this and if you need help, ask for it so it becomes realistic) and human interactions, human communication.
I know I don't research everything I write, but God, research is so vital, it's like ... everything to writing, especially when writing realistic. Artistic liberties are cool, just ...... at least know /where/ you're taking artistic liberties...

Sorry. >.<

history! i hate how some fics severely lack research on the rules and customs of historical periods then the author just writes about random people marrying the emperor with ease or legit strangers hugging princes like ??? or the very worst of all: "you can call me zetian" - uh no thanks, empress, i dont need to go through the ancient methods of torture, thanks ._.
and i also agree very much with the comment below mine! some authors dont properly research illnesses or mental disorders then they romanticise them as if thats a cure or something smh e_e

Medical terms, mental disorders and culture. Just as well as drugs/drugs effects, laws/law enforcement. These are some from the top of my head. Generally speaking though, you should always research whatever you want to write about, or about the environment the story will take place. It's good to make plans before actually writing a story to cover most of these issues.
[deactivated] 7 years ago
Anything, really. One thing being, if the story is based in some country from this world, they would research how this country actually works. (I mean, I should do that more, I think.)
