Question for the authors

How long does it take for you to finish writing one chapter?

For me myself the fastest is 2-3 hours of writing+editing, the longest can take almost a day. But usually my average time is 5-6 hours.

I'm curious about yours.

@ladywolf Me too haha. I sometimes am too eager to post that I just finish writing at the crack of dawn, update without editing and then go to sleep, only to wake up minutes later wondering what the hell did I write hahaha. I really have these moments were I'm so exhausted that I don't remember what I just posted. And editing, ugh I hate editing. I'm nearly finishing my chaptered fic, and now I have re-read the whole thing to edit and catch all the grammar or typos scattered about. I seriously hate editing.

It really depends on many factors, but I found a way to write at any given moment. Instead of writing a document on MS Word, I write on Google Docs and have the app on my phone. That way during any free moment I have I can add ideas or edit on my phone (works offline too) and then continue on my laptop or at my dad's place. I live in two households, so it's easier to just log on a computer to write than having to carry my laptop everywhere. It's also a good trick to keep writing while travelling. So maybe this can be a good tip for you guys.

That depends a lot on many factors.

I have spent two seconds on a 3-word chapter.

I have spent about four hours on a rather short chapter (1674 words, to be exact) that required learning a bit of Hebrew and intense study of Shakespeare's Othello.

I've spent about a total of five hours on a 15-page chapter that was complete fiction.

I've spent about two hours on a 2-page chapter that was practically an essay on what happened between Japan and America in World War II.

So it's very dependent on conditions. These chapters are all part of the same story, by the way.

... That depends. A lot. On everything.

These days, I don't really write chaptered fics, but say a chapter of mine is around 5.000-7.000 words. Depending on inspiration, motivation, time, and a hell lot of other things, I can write a 'chapter' in a few hours or a week. When I'm on a roll, I can easily write 7.000 words a day - but usually this roll lasts only that one day, and then I'm back at 0-5.000 words a day.

Editing takes longer. I always read my fics through at least three times (often more than five times, even) and find things to add and edit. If we ignore my beta, editing can take everywhere from a day to months. If we count my beta, well. A month or more, pffft. She's busy.

So. Roughly, a 'chapter' (5.000-7.000 words) of mine I'd say takes a week to finish (a couple of days writing on and off and a couple of days editing on and off), if I do it by myself.

i usually take my own sweet time to write because i don't do it straight until it completes. i'll stop after a few paragraphs and do something else. later or tomorrow, ill continue it whenever i want as long as it never exceeds 14 days. i update twice a month so that's why.

It depends really. Sometime when I got the kick to write then it would be around 1500 words for 2 hours. Mostly I will get distracted so i actually took days to finish one lol.

My chapters are mostly 7K-8K so it takes me 5, 6 hours to write. Then I take a break and I ask myself what I am doing with my life because I am absolutely exhausted. I usually edit the day after, when I am well rested and can see what I wrote clearly, I edit for 2 hours most of the time. Editing is horrible, let me say. Just. Plain. Terrible.

Since life happens all the time, and issues seem to love me the past years or so, a chapter may take anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks of short 1 hour sessions. Editing is the part I am more bored of, so it takes more than actually writing it. This also has to do with the fact all of my chapters are 4K+, some even 11K, depending on the story. Finishing an 11K chapter is hard work and usually takes me a month of on and off work.

To write a chapter and to edit it until I'm satisfid it takes about...6 hours? (4k/5k chapters for me) I think a lot about imagery and hidden hints in my stories and the planning takes up most of the time :3

Currently I'm doing a really long one though and since I'm not used to it, it's taking a hell of a lot of time... I guess it just varies

3k chapter= about two scattered hours

Depends on the worth count. I can write 2k on 2 hours if I'm really focused and I don't edit so. But I think in general a 2-3k chapter takes me 5 scattered hours and the 10k chapters take about 12 hours of full concentration (which never happens lmao)
moekyah 7 years ago
I don't even edit lol, so for me it tand like 3 hours. Since most of my story is 1000 -2000 capped, there are many chapter and mistake.

If I have all the research done and have a pretty good idea of the content for the chapter, it takes me 2 to 4 hours (without editing). Editing will take more time.

takes me 2-3 hours, i hardly edit...thats why I have so much typos...but its minor typos and grammatical errors, so its not that noticeable

O.o wow lucky I wish I did it yhat quick. It takes me a day, with few to no distractions. For editing it takes about eight hours. My chaps are usually 3000 +

I take three days to one week to finish one chapter because the piece that I'm currently working on (Silent Sonata) requires research not only on the musical factors (pieces that the characters play, instrumental techniques, music history, etc.) but also research on other factors such as the geography of NYC (the main setting), mental illnesses - really, there's so much research involved because I want to keep my story as realistic as possible (but that doesn't mean that I don't make up fictional places here and there, which I do). It doesn't tire me though, because I'm passionate about my story and I dearly love my readers. They're my energy pill.

currently I'm writing a semi-real fan fiction; collecting materials + merging them in a logical timeline would take about 2-3 days. Actually writing the whole story would take me a few hours or maybe 1-2 days because I tend to think my chapters out thoroughly.

For angst oneshot with 2-3k words, I can finish it within 3 hours. My average is 1000 words per hour. Usually I can take mostly 5 hours to finish a chapter. If I am not motivated enough, I will abandon it and only return from time to time. (lol) Sometimes it will take me a week or more if I am not inspired to write at all.

it depends on the type of story i'm writing. if it's something lighthearted, i can write it in 1-2 hours? if it's something really heavy though, I'd need 1-2 days xD I also have to really be in the mood to be able to write chapters fast so that's why I seldomly write unless I have sudden inspiration

these days i take a very long time; from two weeks to a few months. mainly because i really think my chapter out plus beta reading for other authors. but the fastest i have written a chapter would be three days
