I know people who turn off their subscribers because they get too stressed out by the number. It happens all the time that people leave but to a new author, this can be so disappointing and disheartening. I think that this may be why some authors also turn it off. Or at least, I have done that in the beginning as well because I don't want to be too focussed on how many readers I have and rather put all my energy in producing a good, solid story.
for me, i hide the subs for my most popular story. it is as Ellyjelly96 said. I don't want people to assume that due to the amount of subs, that's it a cliche story/not good.
@Emilieee I don't mean that subs is the only thing they look for. For me, looking at the subs would come after I've found the genre in the tag search rather than clicking on ads and featured fics.
I know its a minority that really alienate a fic if it's too popular or even look at the subs and views, but there are still people that do it. That's what I meant. My mistake if you felt I meant everyone.
I used to until one of my stories got a bit more successful. People hide the views and subs because they don't want that to deter people from the story. The same foes for a story with loads of subs. Some people may not want to read a fic that is too popular because sometimes it's too generic and typical.
