What do you think of love triangles (or any type of love polygon)?

Do you like them? Love them? Dislike, hate? And any reasons why?

@reddoll123 I had specific dramas and fanfics in mind while writing that example lol so it's not too weird that you thought of many yourself.
You're welcome ^^

@reddoll123 I would be able to accept it though I would still be bothered by the fact that they had to hurt over the time so much

@YouWillFly Lol, well I guess in a way that situation worked out in the end.
Oh o.o. Yeah, I guess so xD, to each their own.

@Evanaevanz Well, not /every/ story :P. But yeah, I agree, like if say it's not a romance-focused story then it shouldn't just be about the love triangle ^^.

@Tatari Had dramas, soap operas and stories in mind after reading that example xD. Thanks for your long answer ^^.

true. some aren't established, but then that still leaves a person out or whatever if the other pair hooks up. reminds me of what happened with my friend and her friend who met a guy at a club. my friend wasn't into the guy and let her friend go after the male since she was into him. funny thing was... the guy had no interest in my friend's friend, but in my friend instead. but being a girl's code of her friend calling dibs on the guy, she didn't go after him. but later throughout the week or whatever, they saw him again and she only talked to him as a friend, but her friend got jealous of this and my friend told her that she knew, but she wasn't going to pursue the guy since she liked him, even though he already told her friend he had no interest in her. but yeah, i don't know, but neither of them even hooked up since the guy turned out to be shady. lol and my friend isn't friend with that girl anymore either. but um... to each their own. ^^

@reddoll123 Yeah, consider to continue reading. But if flanderisation of characters happens in the long term, perhaps I may or may not continue reading. It all depends on how well it is written.

@YouWillFly Not all love triangles involve an established couple though...like it could be three single people with crushes/in love with each other in that...triangley/ V-shaped way xD (And then yea I guess two might end up together or none of the three end up together).
Thanks for your answer ^^.

@SistarsStar1 Thanks for the answer ^^. Though love polygons don't have to be harems/reverse harems, they could be just a ton of people into each other in some way that it ends up needing a flow-chart to keep track of all the likes/loves xD.

No idea is bad. However, execution can most definitely be bad. So please think about the execution of the love triangle, and make it good!

For me they really have to be done just right. I like it when the third wheel also ends up with someone, or if it becomes playful and they still hit on the main characters just to tease. Love polygons can be fun if done right, but.. I don't know, things just have to make sense for it to work for me.

Well, they certainly have the power to make you bald with frustration, that's what.
Haha. Oh, love triangles. Funny story; I'd been thinking of asking users on this site the very same question. And I must say that I personally have had very frustrating experiences with them in general. The two love interests are bound to be vexing to some degree, but the main character faced with them at both sides is what truly gets under my skin and is the main reason why I simply rage quit every love triangle story I most likely read. Far too much miscommunication, barely any plot development, and general main character stupidity that never, ever, /ever/ changes. I've had some painful experiences with this, and the decisions most characters make between the two love interests are far too often just... nonsensical. I've yet to find a character involved in a love triangle that actually thinks for themselves and makes credible, real-life-worthy decisions.

I don't really like them because I tend to feel sorry for the third person that will end up alone in the end

i dont like them as the main focus. as a side focus to a bigger genre, then its fine. like the main plot could be fantasy, action, supernatural etc and the side plot includes the love-triangle, then its fine. a sole genre on love triangle, pisses me off

Here is the thing, love triangles do exist but someone shouldn't focus the entire story on them. Like every story has a male lead, a second lead and a female lead. So what if the second lead falls for the female. He must have something else going for him instead of just the romance.

Let me give you an example.

A really likes B. A has been childhood friends with C. C really likes A but knows A likes B, because A won't shut up about B. B didn't have any feelings for A (or even hated A in the beginning) but develops feelings for A after some time. C thinks he can never have a chance with A in the beginning but ends up fighthing for A anyway. There are a lot of complications between A, B and C. Drama ensues. A ends up with B in the end anyway. A and C stop being friends or C accepts their fate and 'bears the pain of loving A but is happy to be able to stay close to them'. A and B love and live happily ever after.

Had a story in your mind? Sure, because that's an unnecessary overused plotline. (Or something similar.)

To be honest, I'm really neutral about love triangles as long as they're done right. If it's boring generic stuff then I stop reading it, but I won't hate the story itself - I'll just lose interest. There are stories out there with love triangles that can blow your mind to tiny pieces (I've read some) but I just really really love stories that are done so well with the love triangle story plotline. I give kudos to all the (real) authors that were able to take that example I'd given you above and form it into a masterpiece, like holy pumpkin, take my soul.

Just one thing: If you need the love triangle to make something out of your story (because drama), it shows the lack of thinking about actual plot and the lack of the plot itself. If someone writes a story just solely about the love triangle... Yeah, where's the actual plot? It's something all of us have read so often. And I really mean the love triangle is the only plot when I say the love triangle is the only plot. Something like the romance should be a side thing that develops over time, and shouldn't be solely the plot of your whole story if you write about... I don't know, wizards, monsters or stuff. (Though normal school life would be hard to judge but even there, there is a lot you can do plot-wise so...)

I can't put my thoughts into proper explanations right now but meh. You get the jist, right?
So yeah, I'll read it if it's good, no matter what it's about.
