Review: My Love From Another Star

If you're a avid fan of star-crossed lovers Cheon Song Yi and an alien Do Min Joon, you definitely know what I'm going to talk about.

So I've been following My Love From The Stars from the first episode until it ends yesterday. I'm not the type who would watch one or two episodes every week and patiently waiting for the next episode to come out. But this drama has been playing on ONE HD in a few episodes before I came back for my semester break, so I thought why don't I watch it? I was bad at calculation basically so I did not actually count and estimate whether I could really do a marathon for that drama. At that time, I thought that even if I started watching it on that day as a marathon, I would be able to marathon it right up to the end. But I did my marathon too fast that I finished watching all the aired episodes at that time (I think the last was the 10th episode) and I have to wait for one week just to watch the next episode - THIS is what I meant; the thing I actually don't like to do when it comes to drama marathon. This reminds me of Rooftop Prince where I couldn't barely estimate if I would be able to marathon it all in one go without having to wait for the next broadcast.

Anyway, despite all the wait, it was worth it. The drama ended nicely. It was an unexpected ending and one could even say that it was left open for viewers to interpret. It was not cliche, but somehow it left readers with a few questions.

I'm not gonna go straight to the ending. Let us see what brings us to keep loving this drama and follow it right up to the end.

Firstly, the theme was rather unique; it was not time-travel, but rather space travel. It's between human and alien; from a different world altogether. If a time travel drama, normally we would be directed back to the Joseon era, but this drama is different from that. This drama, although it does revolved around four centuries ago, it does not actually involve time travel or reincarnation or things like that. It is just an alien who had lived that long- for freaking 400 years like a vampire. This adds another merit to the drama. In order to make the lead somehow 'immortal', Do Min Joon was not made a vampire; but rather an alien. This is how it is different from the other drama series. We would often think that immortals are always vampires; together with their supernatural abilities and weaknesses with the nature. But this drama concept is different altogether. Although Do Min Joon as an alien has possessed some abilities, the power are more to scientific rather than well... supernatural. Teleport or space jump, time stopping and ability to move things here and there, hearing sense which is greater than that of humans'; these are all the abilities that can be made proven scientifically; although in this drama, Do Min Joon has his own weaknesses too and we all know what that is, lol~

Secondly, it does not involve person from the past and another from the present. It does not involve a person in the present which is a reincarnation of the person living in the past, either. In this drama, it involves a woman from the Earth, and a man from another different star; someone who is not from Earth even; a different world altogether. Like I said earlier, star-crossed lovers. I admire these two couple a lot in this drama. How they fought together in the battle of their fate determination has gained my utmost respect; that is what makes this drama WONDERFUL. Not to mention, their farewell departures makes me cried my heart out because it was really sad! And it really feels like you really send off a person you truly love to somewhere which is not even possible for you to reach; that is the destiny which is worse than death! Of course, the writer wouldn't let us die of sadness right? hehe~

Thirdly, the confession and the proposal. Both of them comes from Cheon Song Yi, the heroine. Now who says girls can't propose? It makes her the heroine to shine brighter out of her braveness but at the same time it does not make Do Min Joon's character lame or anything - he's still awesome as always. He did plan for a proposal but his power just didn't work at that time. And he tried the second time at the beach and it still turned out beautifully.

However, it was rather disappointing to see that the fact that everytime Song Yi confesses and says she loves him, Do Min Joon would not reply the same. A kiss in return is rather typical since it's like action speaks louder than words. Changing topic when she asked... asking Song Yi to finish off her ramyeon instead?? That's even more... sad! What more with the fact that he's leaving soon. We keep on anticipating when is Do Min Joon going to say it out, say those meaning three words out. BUT WHO WOULD EXPECT THAT DO MIN JOON WOULD STOP THE TIME JUST TO SAY I LOVE YOU??? Who would expect Do Min Joon to stop the time, walked towards Song Yi who was frozen with time, and kissed her??? I mean, isn't that beautiful???

What makes my heart flutters most of the time throughout this drama is that how Do Min Joon loves her but never had the guts to show it to her. Truthfully, I keep on watching the scene where he froze the time and kissed her after he rejected her. And I keep on watching the scene where he kept on texting Song Yi but never send it until he typed out the words 'I miss you.' And I keep replaying the scene at the beach where Song Yi asked him for the last time if he ever liked her as herself and not because of the owner of the hairpin; whether Min Joon had ever fluttered because of her, worried for her and others. And when he recalled every moments only to deny it in the end hurts me the most - it shows how he really loves her but because of his upcoming departure, he couldn't say it all out.

Fourthly, an alien's tears. Gosh, how can an alien can still be so handsome even during crying?!?! I couldn't agree more with whoever that says Kim Soo Hyun really knows how to cry; because he was deeply immersed in the character. I've seen him in Moon Embraces the Sun and all of his tears did not come out forcefully; they naturally stream down his face and that makes me hurt even more- seeing the one you love in pain. lol

Last but not least, the ending. His indefinite return. One thing I can say about the ending is that; eventually things will go back to where they belong. That's how it usually is. I'm not saying Do Min Joon is a thing here okay yeorobun~ I'm just saying that well since he's an alien, he doesn't really belong on Earth. Eventually he'll have to return or else he'll die. The fact that he had lived for 400 years does not make him truly belonged on Earth because after 400 years he'll have to go back to the place where he originally came from. But what is interesting about the ending is that the writer makes it happen, but not immediate. Do Min Joon can actually stay there on Earth, but not become a human. Honestly, my typical mind (although I'm not sure how all of you would think) kept predicting the ending to be that Min Joon will leave for a while and return for good; as a human where he can eat, live, grow up, age, kiss without getting sick and do lots of other things human can do and does no longer possess the powers he had. But if we are to see that predictable ending than he can just lose all of his powers from the very beginning and they didn't have to go through all the tears of pain. This is what I meant by being somewhere they belong. Do Min Joon isn't even a human and can never be a human and cannot live on Earth as a human, but he can stay as an alien, retain his power and stay on Earth, living the life he had usually been living for the past 400 years.

I know that the ending was confusing. Did he really stay or not? Well like I said, the drama seemed to have its ending left open for the viewers to interpret for themselves. Let's recall the ending; where they were interviewed and Song Yi said that the most important thing is that with each time he returns, the time if longer. We can assume that if he keep trying, then maybe he can remain on Earth forever and stay with Song Yi till the end of her life. This is strengthen by the edward's book which was left open when Do Min Joon disappeared that night. "Once there was a rabbit who had found a way home." They say home is where the heart is. Do Min Joon's home is where Cheon Song Yi is... Certainly, he had indeed found a way back home. To Song Yi. Forever. And that is how Song Yi woke up the next day with him by her side saying the last word "I'm home".

He's back.

He has returned.

He's home.

Forever.

That's how I want the ending to be. That's how I believe the ending is to be.

And I will forever ship these two couple - Do Min Joon and Cheon Song Yi. Although in real life, Kim Soo Hyun is always mine. And Gianna Jun is already married for heaven's sake! So let's wake up from our dreams now, oh?

Anyway, I will miss this drama and will keep the memories in my heart forever.
