Chinese Words In Stories

Okay so this issue has been bothering me for a while but I'm saying this now because I saw my friend's blog post and I wanted to spread the word too. Before I start, I'm going to say this so that no one will bash me or something. I have been learning Chinese since the day I could speak. Yes, that means I've been learning and speaking and writing Chinese for 18 years of my life. I'm very sure I'm more accurate then Google translation.

Anyway, what I want to say is that it's funny to see Chinese in fics. I don't know, if you want to write the language, then at least understand it first, or at least understand what you are writing. Don't go to some translation website and type it in English to get your translation in Chinese. Do you know how different Chinese and English is? They maybe talking about the same thing but the arrangements of the words are different. You do not directly translate it because it will be wrong.

As a Chinese myself(though not fully), I feel offended when I see those directly translated words. I would be thinking 'wtf are those people trying to say or think?' The same goes for pinyin. What's pinyin you ask? E.g.: for 哥, the pinyin is ge. Yes GE. The one most people BLINDLY used in their story. For sake, ge does not mean oppa okay? I fking call my brother and cousins ge. Those people are the one only you can call ge. Not even your friends.

And just because your story has like EXO-M in it, that doesn't mean you have to have Chinese words in your story. Yes, maybe a few words like ge(guy to guy is alright but not girlfriend to boyfriend), ni hao or xie xie is fine. But not like the whole sentence and then translate it. What is the point? I swear no one gives a . They will just skip to the English translation because they don't even understand. And some even have the Chinese pinyin wrong. The worst is those who give a few rubbish Chinese sentences without translation. I have no idea what you are saying and you don't even want to translate for those non-Chinese reader to read? Wow, fantastic. I think this issue applies even to Korean words. Some people will write a whole chunk of Korean words without translation and many people do not even understand what it means.

My point is that I don't want to see Chinese being misused. I feel disgusted and insulted when I see stuff like this. If you don't even bother to understand what it means then don't ing put it up okay? It is like you are not respecting the language and putting it up just because you think it will look better. It does not make you look better. It makes you look stupid and ignorant.

Sorry for the rant and the vulgarity. I tend to snap easily when it comes to respect issues, even for languages.

I totally agree, there's no respect for the language at times... I mean, what kind of GF calls her BF 'Ge'? I'm pretty sure 'BaoBei/Baby' is better (tho i may be wrong).

When I write EXO-M scenes, the guys call their elders Ge, but that's because they are freaking close to them, and have spent years with them.

My OC (who is a fellow idol) will call the Chinese boys Ge, but that's because she is Yeol's sister, and has trained with the boys for 3 years. The rest of my OCs won't call them Ge. The boys will be called Oppa. 'Cos that's how close they are to each other.

My end statement: Respect is due to every language. So please give it.

I understand how you feel...
I'm partly Chinese, but I grew up from another place,
though I can't really understand it, I have been told that 'ge' is not for girlfriend and boyfriend use, I asked my Grandma about it and she even scold me for having a boyfriend though I don't....anyways the point is
I really understand what you feel! :)

Ok, I'm sure you're right you're Chinese and I'm not. So, I have a question, I thought 'ge' could be used for anybody, including friends.

Mind if I comment?

I actually agree with this. Lately I've been refraining myself from using Chinese or Korean words in my stories because-well I'm not entirely sure how to use them correctly as I don't want to offend anyone on accident.

I mean really, why put something like a Korean or Chinese phrase in their story when they have no idea what it actually means? -__-

Wow okay that was strong, but yeah I totally agree with you. I can't stand it when people freely use languages without knowing the proper definitions. >_< I haven't come across such fics yet and I don't ever hope to but seriously, gege for a girl to her bf is like wth -.- I can totally imagine some people acting smart and calling EXO-M 'ge' in fan signs like wow that'd be the biggest joke ever.
