Haru is the posterchild for expectaton vs. reality:

EXPECTATION:

    

Expectation: cold city boy, chic, quiet intimidating broody type. Cheekbones in the corner oozing mysterious allure. 

Haru has been trained with that image in mind, being the brooder, the unapproachable manly kdrama protagonist who grabs wrists and tsundere hugs from behind and it's not like I like you or anything- you know the drill. The strong image regulation, god forbid the fans find out what he's really like, that's not going to set their loins aflame and get them to buy future albums, or spend all their money voting! And Haru's a little weakwilled weenie who generally just does what people ask of him. He's an eager to please little thing who honestly just wants to do a good job, but could he maybe do a good job while also peeling a banana with his bare feet? No? 

REALITY:

    

Realty: Dweeb. Dork. Dumb dumb. Little weak-willed eager to please weenie. Squish. Least intimidating person on the planet. Kid just wants to be himself but Big Hit ain't having any of it.

All he really wants to do is let his dweeb out. Make dumb faces at the camera or during performances, dance like an imbecile, wear an afro wig and big pink rubber gloves and do the octopus dance. Haru is an idiot and he embraces every bit of it, and sometimes he has trouble staying focused and wants to just goof off and have fun and be the little he is inside, ya know?

He's a real sweetie, wouldn't hurt a fly, and lets everyone walk all over him. Would get all of his lines poached because he can't stand up for himself worth a damn. As long as they're happy, he thinks, as he utters the two lines that are left for him and cries a little on the inside (but not on the outside ofc, his emotions are on company-mandated lockdown), with how could this happen to me playing in the background. 

Honestly though, much of this comes from his bullied days, the times where he just tried to keep his head down and let other people do what they want hoping they'd leave him alone. As such, he really doesn't do well with fighting and confrontation, as soon as tempers flare Haru will hold quiet and hope people forget he's there. His own temper is locked up farther than his outward emotions are and he has the key himself this time, it's going to take a lot to get him going and he's quicker to just burst out crying than he is to start yelling. 

Honestly just protect Go Haru pls.

OTHER —

x Yes he just completely accidentally happened to have a name that could 100% be Korean. It was a coincidence but he doesn't usually correct people if they assume he's Korean. Racism is a and sometimes it's just easier, ya know?

 

x He doesn't really get the whole animosity between Japan and Korea thing and it always makes him feel uncomfortable when it's brought up. The war is so far in history, can't we just forget it? He just wants to sleep a lot, is that too much to ask?

x He has a habit of hitting people when he's really cracking up.

 

x His stan group is SHINee, he adores them so much, all five of them.

 

x Very much a "you with the deep voice and ty singing, you will become a rapper" kind of rapper, but he actually really loves rapping now!

background — 

Go Haru is Japanese, his name just happens to also be an acceptable Korean name. He was born in Kyoto and lived there until he was 7 but he doesn't remember a lot about it all aside from being amazing by the girls in the pretty kimono and the waves of tourists in equal measure. When he was 7 the family moved to Seoul where his dad was going to work at a Korean branche of the company. He was bullied a lot when he started going to a Korean school, mostly for being Japanese and not yet able to speak Korean much. He found out the hard way that Koreans really really really do not like the Japanese and kids always have a way of bringing out the opinions of their parents. He did not have a good time.

All that Not A Good Time Haru was having, he found his escapism in the form of pop music. When he watched video after video of pretty girls and boys on stage singing pretty songs he could forget himself and his troubles. That's when he first fell in love with kpop and the love kept growing and growing and growing until he was sure that he wanted to be there with these artists. So the kiddo started auditioning for companies and ended up with Big Hit in 2014 as a 15 year old kiddo, back when BTS was still stuck in their angsty teenage boy phase. 

And that's... it basically. He's a simple sweet boy.

trainee life at bighit — 
Haru got into Big Hit in 2015 and has been training diligently ever since. When he got in it was probably just for his deep voice and cheekbones and less for the questionable rendition of Noona Neomu Yeppeo he was doing. but hey who knows what hitman bang is into I don't judge. He's worked hard ever since to get his dancing and rapping up to par (he was instantly identified as a rapper voice).

Has kept the fact that he's Japanese under wraps so far, a couple of people knew who have since left the company, and the staff knows of course. Yay linguistically ambiguous name!!

opinion on the bighit boys — It's... complicated. They knew him as a little before this image bs started, so that's an added layer to that. He was also not the most popular of trainees because of his predisposition for losing focus and goofing off, it can be hard to Haru to get his head in the game, he's much too prone to being distracted. Sometimes it's that wig and the pink gloves, sometimes it's a camera in the corner of the room that he can't help but make faces to, etc. Don't get him wrong, Haru wants to debut as much as the next trainee, but he can't help it sometimes. Something catches his interest and he's gone.

opinion on the freelancers — Haru looks at the freelancers and sees a bunch of people who are so much more free than he is. People who don't have a manager breathing down their necks whenever they show a drop of personality, whenever they pull a face that the company doesn't deem idol-like, whenever take grab a banana with their bare feet. There are so many interesting people among them too, way more diverse and intersting people than the Big Hit bois who he's know all his life and doesn't always get along with. So many cool people he'd love to talk to!

▪ Okay, Haru. Be cool. Be mysterious. Be y broody. You got this. He stares into the camera with the coolness he's been taught. "Hello, I'm rapper Go Haru." Definitely Korean rapper Go Haru. Super Korean. Please don't see right through him.

 

"what made you want to become an idol and why did you sign under bighit?"  

▪ His muscles are primed to light up in the biggest most puppyish fanboyish smile at the very thought of SHINee before he wrestles them under control. Not today face muscles, not today. "I wanted to become an idol because of how much I admire SHINee sunbaenim." Is that cool enough? He's not entirely sure, maybe he should have spun some super dramatic sad story about being a cool gang member who decided to better his life and become an idol or something- the next question is already being asked!
 

"do you think that you'd have the same chances as with bighit if you were signed under another company?"  

▪ "Eh..." he didn't usually think a lot about this sorta thing you know. "I think so?" Wait was that the wrong answer? it was probably the wrong answer. "I mean. I think Big Hit is primed to become one of the bigget companies in the industry and I'm very fortunate to be here." He'd heard one of the staff members say as much, I'm sure they wouldn't mind that he just... stole that line... a little.
 

"what would you say is your biggest strength and your biggest weakness?"  

▪ Oh he totally knew this! No no bad face muscles get back down this instant. "I'm a good rapper and dancer," he says when the smoulder has been restored. "But I know that I'm still learning and I will work hard to show the best that I can." Also you can't sing worth you moron, but he was told not to actually tell any real weaknesses so there. 
 

"how far would you go to succeed in the show?"  

▪ That was a weird question. He opened and closed his mouth before realized he probably looked like a fish and shutting his mouth. He didn't know! Not far, probably. Not far at all but that wasn't a super cool thing to say for his super cool persona now was it? "I would do as much as it takes to debut." THERE. SUPER COOL. He made sure to say it as deep as he could without sounding stupid too.... he hoped he hadn't gone too deep and sounded super stupid. 
 

"what do you have that makes you a standout from all the other bighit trainees?"  

▪ What's with all these super deep takes he was not prepared for this agdgjdfklgdjfk. Had he gotten the wrong sheet of preparation questions? he might have.  He supposed he really shouldn't say how lovely he looked in pink rubber gloves and an afro. "I have a unique sound and unique visuals." Right, that's what the trainee manager told him once, right after going on to say that he should never smile again. 
 

"that's it so far. do you want to add anything else?"  

▪ "Look forward to my performance." He was told to say as little as possible so that should be good right? Short and intense? Send a really intesne look at the camera? He totally had this. He wasn't silly, he was cool. Ice cold.

Strength —  

He can peel a banana with his feet. Damnit Big Hit set him free and let him show his real face to the world!!

 

Okay for real though, he's a pretty good rapper with a really nice deep tone and he's a pretty good dancer too who can keep up with choreos. Not the best at anything, far from the worst at anything, that's Haru. Honestly his biggest strength is his eagerness to perform and his willingness to improve.

Weaknesses —  

 

Musically? Mostly he's still growing, he's a growing boy still probing to find the limits of his talent. He keeps improving with every challenge but his start is far from on top.
