— Oh our little gongju Minjae. Having been raised with a little bit of priviledge, Minjae is used to getting her way in some form. This includes being able to afford the better things in life, having luxury and class all around her at any given time. She is such a er for luxry items, and can be a little bratty and fussy when she can't have the best item, and has to settle for second best. She will grump, complain, and try her best to weasel those around her to get her way. But it's not so much the brand new designer bag or shiny gold rings she's after all the time. Minjae is a very intuive person who knows how to read the situations around her. What she;s really wanting is to control the situation into her favor, or to ensure it does not spiral out to the point that she is affected. The best way to diffuse a situation is to read it and stop the spiral before it even begins.

And despite being a little bit of princess on the spoiled front, Minjae is fortunately one as well when it comes to manners and responsiblity. Keep it classy. She reads social cues well, very rarely let's herself come off as anything but a mature, sophisticated person in the public sphere. But along with this comes some of her own vanity. Minjae has spent so long being a perfect image, she's gotten used to checking her mirror, fixing her appearance, and ensuring everything on her beautywise is in place. She knows she looks good though, so don;t worry. You don't have to her ego. She will accept your silent adoration, and if it's not there, you just don't know better yet.

If these don't bother you, Minjae is actually quite good company to keep around. She is always eager to just be one of the girls or guys, and is always happy to help out when she can. Need someone to walk with you to the store? Sure, Minjae just needs to put her shoes on. She truly enjoys having friendships as she never had many lasting ones, and treasures the ones she makes. Even if the person recieving it might have to deal with her more bratty side at times. And Minjae accepts you for who you are, regardless. If you've been kind to her, she has no reason to not be the same. She doesn't limit herself to what the social norms around her dictate. She knows them, and can manuever within them. So something a little different? That's not so scary. Plus, the unconventional could be just what she needs to get that edge to further her plan for world domination.

But having said that, Minjae has little patience for nonsense. If it's time to work, it' time to work. Play can come afterwards. And she has a habit of coming off as brusque and curt when it comes to work matters. Maybe it's the language barrier. But Minjae rarely minces words. Say what you mean, say it directly, and don't feel bad about it. And if you feel bad about it? Then maybe take a little more care with what you say, idiot. For Minjae, when she is working she is moving towards her goals. For her, work is worth doing well. She doesn't need your praise: her work will speak for itself. 

But despite this, maybe from being without a whole lot of meaningful relationships or being dismissed too often, Minjae does have one thing she absolutely hates: to be forgotten. Do not dismiss her. Do not peg her as just a pretty face. She is more of a person than her outward appearance. Remember her as someone who works hard, who will fight for what she wants. She is not looking for handouts in life, nor will she ask for it. But to be forgotten...that;s something else altogether.

Despite her desire to be classy and mature, Minjae can be downright crass in her insults. If you won't listen to reason? "Listen up . Get out of my way, or so help me I'll give you a reason to be spitting up teeth until you're 40." She is never prone to the flight reflex. It's fight, or go down scratching out the 's eyes. Minjae toes a fine, FINE line of being a mature classy woman, and just being an girl with a dirty face and scraped knees from rough it too much. For many reasons, Minjae tries to portray her aura of regality. Alot of it involves what she's been told to portray to the world. But give her a moment to be herself, and Minjae will happily kick off her heels and climb that tree, expensive dress or not.

So to recap:

Spoiled princess who likes to get her way, but when she can't, she'll butter you up, and if that doesn't work, she will jam those pretty manicured nails into your face. But she's really nice in normal circumstances!!

 

background

— Minjae was born in London to a father who worked as a music producer in the UK, often represneting foreign talent as they tried to make it into a mainstream scene. Her mother was once a musical actress from Korea, also known for her trot performances, and met her father while visiting the UK. They married, had kids, etc. Surprisingly successful and well off, the family has never really wanted for anything. At an early age, Minjae was used to being around music and often found herself sitting with her dad as he worked. Always interested in his work, it was natural for her to be enrolled in music lessons, and before long Minjae was showing herself to be a competent musician. Her mom was always more into the idol scene than anyone else in the family, and would often show Minjae performances and enthusiastically mention how Minjae ws pretty enough to be one too! Minjae was always far too practical for that sort of thought though, and preferred the quiet work she did on her own music.

 

The family was always well off, and had two homes: one in Seoul and the other in London. Life was good, the family taking lavish vacations and often alternating where they lived. The after effect however was that neither Minjae nor her bother often built strong freindships since these would often change: but they had each other, and Jaeil is arguably Minjae's best friend and vice versa. Eventually, her father would sell his business, and due to careful investing, ensured he and his family was set for however long they needed.

 

But then her brother, at 15, was being cast in school plays, at the local theater, and was overall being awesome. Immediately, her parents showered him with attention. Minjae was proud of her brother, but it was becoming obvious she was becoming somerhing of an afterthought to her parents these days. Jay then began getting their attention by dancing with her music, and eventually they enrolled her in some dance classes. It was during these dance recitals that Minjae felt the rush of being on stage. Her parents, and her brother all shared this passion, and once again they were a cohesive family. But at the cost of Minjae setting aside her quieter pursuits for a time. She was not going to be left behind.

It came as no suprise when Jaeil was able to nail an audition and become an actor trainee at Fantagio during one of their stays in Korea. Again, Minjae didn't wnt to be left behind. Despite anting to go to university for music theory, she instead began looking for her own opportunity. Her mother dropped several hints that being an idol would be amazing really, and low and behold, Minjae is being stopped in the street asking if she ever considered it. That's how Minjae found herself auditoning for EM. At the time, she reconcilled that this would be a faster, more rewarding track. Plus, she was getting the more immeidate gratification and could work on her singing and dancing. She'd be a package deal. Clearly EM saw something in her, right?

What EM saw was a pretty face. They were pleasantly surprised when Minjae could dance and even sing a little, but the intention was to maybe have her be in their modelling side of things, maybe even acting. But sure enough, she could add visuals to their female idol group, and it would be perfect. Minjae figured this out eventually but it was fine. It didn't matter the reason she got in: she was there, she could use it. Training was fine: she was meeting people, interacting with others who were working hard, and her parents were proud and content. She was going to make a name for herself. She wanted now, more than ever, to be considered a well rounded entertainer. But then she wasn't exactly improving her vocals. nor did there seem to be any interest in improving her vocals. It was fine. Even if she wanted to, she could still do the things she wanted without vocals. Oh, no, no time for that. You're our visual. Be pretty, be perfect, be the girl all men want and the women want to be. Be sweet. Be kind. Be the perfect little doll we need you to be, dance when we tell you to. No, don;t swear, be polite. Perfect. You're in 365, so make sure you don't mess this up and be our star visual!

Truthfully, Minjae plays up this role well on screen, but she is truly suffocating. It is always a fine line for her. She can't be herself anymore. She has to be this image constructed for her by EM. She has to be perfect, the best she can be as an idol and...it's fine. People know her name. They know who she is. It is fine. She can do this if it meant getting closer to her goals.

But then here comes the main rapper. Oh how Minjae hated the fact that yet again, the spotlight was taken from her. It didn't matter if Minjae was prettier: she could not match that charisma. And for a while, she quietly seethed. But images still had to be maintained. Be calm, carry on...

 

And yet...as time went on, Minjae realized something: not being the focus meant she could stop pretending to be this perfect little doll. So what if the others got schedules? That meant Minjae could go spend time in the studio, find a piano, or just enjoy not being scrutinized. Maybe in the end...this idol thing isn't what Minjae wants afterall, or maybe just not in the way it's been packaged for her. Minjae knows she can do good work. But now she needs to accept that she doesn't need to prove that to anyone. Minjae can be fine on her own as long as she is happy with her work...maybe one day, she'll get to that point.

— Son Jaeil (fc: Shownu X3 ) | 23 | Exciteable, Clumsy, Absent Minded, Dedicated, Cowardly, Amiable | Older Brother | Jaeil, better known as James in the UK, is an actor under Fantagio. First appearing in Heirs in 2013, then Cunning Single Lady in 2014, he is gaining some notice. He and Minjae are extremely close, and he calls her Jay in regular conversation. In many ways Minjae's polar opposite. "...bro, you really are an idiot" she says with only the fondest of smiles. Jaeil is also a closeted homoual, with only Minjae knowing the truth after having broken down and told her the truth years ago when they were still in Japan. He's worried about it affecting his career, his family, and once Minjae debuts, HER career. All Minjae knows and cares about is that she had to hold her crying brother and tell him everything would be okay. Should he ever come out, haters beware: Minjae. Will. Cut. You. 

— Son Jaehyun and Lee Ahyoung | 53 and 50 | A couple of well meaning professionals, but scarily savage when it comes to business | Father and Mother | Currently living in the UK for the next year or two before deciding if they will stay in SK with their children. You can see Jaeil reflected in them quite a bit, but they have a savage streak when it comes to their work you only really see reflected in Minjae. However, despite their attempts at levity and being care free, they do have very high expectations of themselves, their children, and will not tolerate anything that comes in the way of their percieved happiness and image. The entire family gets along, but it's obvious where some of Minjae and Jaeil's fear of failure and being forgotten comes from. They just have a bad habit of forgetting the more human aspects of life at times.
 

 

— Seo Yikwang | 25 |  Labelmate and her favorite "OPPA" | It's an interesting match really. But ask anyone who knows Minjae, and it;s not surprising that she and Yikwang get along so well. He was the first to introduce himself on Girls, Girls, Girls, and the one who made her feel less awkward on set by just being Yikwang. She adores him as a dumb older brother at times, and he can make her genuinely laugh without fail. Every. Single. Time.

 

— Sunhee and Tim (Minjae has tried and can actually say his full name...with much difficulty...and a few breaths...yeah, never again) | A pair of s | Labelmates| "You two s are on my last can of patience...and the can is now crushed under my foot. — "Fighter" is her workout song, and she can't talk enough about how much she loves the visuals of the Clan series.
— Minjae is a er for good vocals. She is weak when she hears someone who sings beautifully and can't help but gush about it.

— Minjae wants to go back to school. Maybe being overlooked will afford her thetime to pursue this.

— Her parents provide her a stipend for a while, but once Minjae has regular work, she declines it and tries to manage on her own. Thrift shopping stems from this act.

— She  has no qualms with bugs or spiders.. She hates bugs though. And will annihilate them without mercy.

— She has a favorite ring her brother bought her with one of his first paychecks from his work. It's just a simple silver band with her English name in the interior of the band, but she loves it very much.

stage name Jay - it's not the most interesting name, but they went through a lot of options. JJ, Mini, JaeMin, J, Love-J, all sorts of silly things. Eventually, someone overheard her talking with her brother and he called her "Jay"> Someone said "AHA" and now Minjae goes by the stagename Jay. Fun stuff.

stage presence Minjae is a good dancer who can sing a little (weak comparatively), and can be overlooked by the main dancer's more fluid, stronger dance, and by the main rapper's overall charisma and presence. So it's easy to forget her. But Minjae is steady. If anyone gets lost in a performance, you can look to Minjae to get yourself back on track. She the member on point when you need her to be. Her charisma is not as outwardly strong or exuberant, but it's one of those slow, steady burns that will surprise you if you take time to notice it.

extra skills Minjae can play piano, guitar, cello, and violin. Perhaps her biggest skill then is musicality: she may not be able to sing, but she can listen and appreciate tone, sound, pitch, etc. She has a fascination with the actual process of recording and production from her family's business, and honestly could do well working behind the scenes. While she is not neccessarily a song writer yet, the idea of musical composition does excite her, and writing lyrics may be something that comes to her later as she continues in her career. 

Her variety skills also aren't terrible. While not outright funny or hilarious, she has a self assuredness that can throw people off and make for good material. But this really only shines if their main rapper isn't present. Funny how things work.

And does being a "shadow manager" count for anything? Because Minjae is very good at getting people off their butts and on the move.

—  Minjae smiles at the camera and in a smooth movement bows politely, "Hello, I'm Son Minjae, 21 years old, trainee for 2 years." 
 

you are finally debuting in an idol group. How do you feel about that? 

— "Hmm," Minjae taps her chin thoughtfully for a moment, thinking and choosing her words carefully, "It's interesting. I can only hope I live up to expectations and not disappoint!" 
 

why did you decide to become an idol? and why em entertainment?

— Again, a short thoughtful moment before Minjae conitnues, "My mom used to tell me stories of her being a performers, being on stage and loving it. She's always missed it, so maybe I'm doing this a little for her. But I also have always enjoyed music and performing, so when we came to Korea it was a natural thing for me to audition. EM was the first choice after I was briefly scouted on the street to come in for a proper audition. They saw something in me, and here I am!" Minjae doesn't say she knows they only picked her for her pretty face, and were more suprised when it turned out she had some skills afterall...though it did take some work on her voice to make it viable for any group debut. Oh no, Minjae isn't annoyed at that subject at all (grumble).
 

what do you think about your labelmates, mbx?

— "They're a good group of fellas," after a moment, she notices their manager urging her to continue, "Ah, well, they are talented and their music is something to be appreciated. I admire their performances certainly, but their productions are amazing. It takes a lot of heart and skill to write and produce your own music. It's admirable." There is a sincerity in her speech that surprises some. Minjae envies them a little. She can only hope to get to that point in the future as well.
 

the 6 in 365 stands for skills. where do you think you're lacking, and what do you think your strengths are?

— "Oh, I'm pretty fantastic,"  a hairflip, a moment of seriousness, and Minjae simply giggles and  bows in apology, "no, no, that's not true! I feel I lack true voval power, but with support and perseverence I'm sure I can improve! But I am a solid member of the group. I will always be there to help when needed, and you can count on me to not fail. I have no qualms about being here, in front of the camera, and I'm quite comfortable speaking." Despite her dismissing her previous claim...everyone in the room very well knows the first statement was actually her true comment...but viewers don't need to know that, do they? Their manager is sighing in the corner.
 

the 5 in 365 stands for 5 girls. how do you feel about your groupmates?

— "They're amazing people, and are all skilled and fantastic. We will take this world by storm, just you wait!" In actuallity, Minjae had to try and remember who was who again. She felt terribly bad about not being closer with them...but then again, who has the time to be social? 
 

the 3 in 365 stands for making the crowd fall in love with you. do you think 365 will be able to do that?

— "Aren't you in love with me already? And if not, why not?" Again, a moment of seriousness...and then Minjae giggles, "We will certainly try our best!" If anyone knew Minjae...they know for a fact that the first statement was actually the correct one...their manager sighs.

— The friendly, easy going, fun to talk to guy who works in the sound booth. The sort of person you would normally feel very comfortable talking with because although he is easy going, he also has very strong opinions and feelings on matters, and can be easily coaxed to share and debate. He makes jokes that if he was smarter, he'd be far more dangerous than he is. But Hyukjin has always been something of a vitamin for his group of friends. He's the type who can make negative situations seem lighter, and happily jump in with a large gesture in an attempt to make someone laugh. But the boy does have a bad habit of being terribly unabashed and shameless, and has been told more than once to settle down and stop spouting his nonsense. But he's good natured enough to be made fun of and teased...only getting slighlty defensive.

However, when confronted by a force he can't seem to be fluid around, Hyukjin does have a habit of stumbling over himself: both physcially and mentally. There are timed when he just speaks his mind without waiting to process, effectively making things far worse. And this particular thing likes to happen especially around Minjae once he realizes he messed up with her already a long time ago, and is already on strike two before he even realized he's past strike one.

— Back in London, before Minjae moved to Seoul with her parents, her brother had a good friend named Hyukjin (Sam in English actually) who often came over to hang out at the Son household. Hyukjin was nice, kind, fun, everything Minjae was attracted to in a guy. Minjae confessed to Hyukjin, convinced he liked her too, and to her heartbreak he turned her away. And not too gently either. "Are you serious? Why would you even THINK I'd be interested? You;'re too chubby anyways!" Minjae ran away crying, and a little over six months later Hyukjin moved back to Korea with his family. Minjae took a long time to get over him, and used to compare every other guy she met against him. No one was ever better than him for a long time, and Minjae had a reputation amongst the boys as a bit of an ice queen because of this. To say Hyukjin impacted Minjae is an understatement.

 

Fast forward to the present and Hyukjin has recently graduated and found work working in the sound studio for EM. And then, through the door, enters one Son Minjae.

She's pretty, grown up, a classy lady., a polite smiles and respectfulness to the people working around them. And then, she sees Hyukjin, and-
 

"Janey Son! How have you been? It's been a while since-"

"You....YOU. You son of a !"

"Uh...what?"

"Don;t play innocent. You horrible, terrible, irreprehensible cad! How dare you come show your face to me after the hell you put me through!"

"Wait what'd I do?! We haven't seen each other in years! I didn't even know you were in Korea!"

"You destroyed a young girl's heart!" 

...then it clicked...

"Wait, you mean when you confessed to me-..? I WAS FOURTEEN!"

"A horrible, terrible, irreprehensible fourteen year old!"

"You were twelve!"

"A sweet, innocent, impressionable twelve year old!"

 

Yes. All of that happened in London when young Minjae had a crush on her brother's friend, and told him so, and the friend told the little girl to go away. So yes, Hyukjin is Minjae;s first "love", but the love of a child. However, the wrath of pre-teen is fierce, and the grudge long (and too dramatic really).

 

Inevitably, they continue to meet as, well, they are both employed by the same company. But after this initial "YOU BASTARD" meeting, there really isn't too much animosity. He even meets up with her brother again, and they becomes friends once more. But its awkward for him because now he realizes the little girl he called chubby and picked on is actually quite attractive, and she thinks of him as some jerk who likes to break girls' hearts. Or he assumes she thinks that. She actually thinks "Goddamnit, age has been good to this AGHHH". 

Their story really is a big misunderstanding, one after another.

— Minjae had just joined EM, and after training for a few months, she was cast in MBX's debut MV "Girls Girls Girls". Minjae was nervous, and after getting to know Yikwang, was next to befriend Jonggyu after hearing him sing. She complimented his vocals, and she thought he was the cutest thing. Truthfully, she had a little puppy crush on the younger labelmate, and left it at that. They were friendly, but after the MV shoot, and their debut, Minjae...didn't really hear from him afterwards. Okay...but it was fine. They were busy probably. But she still managed to hear from Yikwang, and even the idiot twins (her nickname for Sunhee and Tim). Minjae shurgged it off. Maybe her feelings were a little hurt over the puppy crush, but you know what? Minjae doesn't have time to waste on someone if they won;t vest the same time and thought in her. She doesn;t know Jonggyu had been busy, true, but also...he's just a shy thing and didn't exactly know what to do around her. And when she didn't contact him...well...you get the point.
 

But then, she encountered him in the company about three months before 365's debut. It'd been a while, but she was happy to say hello after all this time. And Jonggyu, in a moment of dumbness, asked, "Uh...what's your name again?" Was it out of nervousness or stupidity? Who knows. But Minjae was FURIOUS. She was part of his debut: was she so easily forgotten? It tooks weeks before Minjae would stop sneering at him. But Minjae did...because let's face it, she still has a crush on him, thinks he's handsome, and is a er for him. 
 

And Minjae HATES this fact. It's too easy for her to get worked up over him, and she may just be too stubborn to admit she likes him. He is nothing but nice to her, and even when mad, keeps being nice. And maybe it's because he likes her a little too and can't get his dumb head around that? Who knows...but Jonggyu can never seem to not do something wrong in front of Minjae. Also...does he pine for the main rapper? The video made it seem like it...but does he really? Minjae mulls over these thoughts and seethes at night sometimes.

Despite this, Minjae does really like Jonggyu, and next to Yikwang, he is one of her favorite people at EM while she is his favorite "noona". Ugh, how complicated this gets...

 

current status

— For both, there's a friendship there ,but it's overlayed by a sense of discomfort since there's a bit of a love triangle happening that none are actually fully aware is present. A comedy of errors truly... With Hyukjin, Minjae has more of a complimenting opponent. With Jonggyu, its more like a  complimenting sidekick. It's complicated, and unless someone makes a definitive move one way or another, there's not going to be much movement.

— Hyukjin's English name is Samuel Yang. He calls Minjae "Janey" and she calls him "Sam". You know their are either having a very intimate conversation or heated debate if they switch in and out of English.

- It's not uncommon for Jonggyu to end up with Minjae knocking him on the head when he does something dumb, though most will some some affection in the action rather than anger.

— I can imagine Minjae being like a Jinyoung from B1A4 - composes, does a lot of stuff behind the scenes, even acts, but doesn't always get top billing until later when people begin to realize she's the one behind the scenes. A quiet take over. XD
