in the short time she was a trainee, yejoo was extremely tired. being low-energy most of her life, her trainee experience felt harder than those who were actually prepared to go into this lifestyle. her entering into the company was more of a 'why not?' kind of decision than a 'of course, this has always been my dream!' kind of decision, so wanting to quit was very likely. she was surprised to hear that she'd be in three d and a bit suspicious that wanbyeok had ulterior motives, but that didn't stop her from willingly debuting with them. overall, her life as a trainee was a bit difficult, but then again, whose trainee life isn't hard?

PREDEBUT ACTIVITIES
show me the money, twenty-fifteen. the cameras cut to a pretty face with long, blonde hair, seemingly deaf to the chaos ensuing around her. she was smiling and waiting for her turn to audition in the first round. most contestants were laughing at her, telling the pretty girl to go home before she humiliates herself.

yejoo's eyes avoided the eyes of the crowd. her stomach felt like it was twisting.
"yes." she stated, a small sigh escaping her lips.

her hand grazed her stomach as a nervous reaction. she shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
"well, before we debuted, i experienced a lot of shouting, which was actually the least of my worries. the lightest punishment i've recieved for slacking would be being smacked on the head by a book or whatever they could find," vivid memories of nasty old men watching her and the girls dance as favors for the ceo flooded her head. she remembered it like it was yesterday. "punishments escalated to slapping and pinching, pushing us onto the floor, hitting us with canes, and even taking our youngest away to do things they had no right to do to her. i was scolded a lot because of my inexperience in dancing and i remember being hit more than the others for being slow and not fully dancing.
"i thought it would stop after we became more successful," she continued. "but everything was the same. as bruises would form, fans would become more worried about us, but we couldn't tell them what was wrong. the company made our stylists dress us in long pants and jackets, even overcoats to keep fans unaware. i always feel like crying when i read their worried comments because i hate keeping things from them.
"most recently, the ceo noticed that i didn't dance as full out as everyone else. they scolded me, telling me to do better and that everyone else was just as tired as me and that my stamina should be improved by the end of that month. i started practicing late at night again and the stage was really slippery, so i kept falling on the ground. i think i sprained my ankle and my wrist or something. kwon jisung won't let me go to the hospital while we're promoting, though. i don't think he'll let me go to the hospital at all, haha." she laughed bitterly.

"i—" she started, then paused. it took a lot in her to tell the judge about the pictures she and the girls had complied out of fear for the abusors' reactions, but her voice came through. "i have a few pictures of the others being hit. i also have an audio recording of an aforementioned manager shouting at me and other members for being late and failing to execute moves on time."
the court listened to the audio, hearing the curses and the insults. some members are heard crying in the background. another member is hit by something and the audio stops. the jury seems shocked and yejoo's stomach twists even more.
iv. Did you tell anyone of what Wanbyeok Entertainment had done to you, with the exception of your group members and fellow employees at the company?
her eyes lowered to her hands, resting in her lap. she remembered all the conversations she had with seungcheol and tried to hide a tiny smile that was growing on her facce.
"i've only talked to one person about this because i know how my friends and family would react if they knew what was going on," she played with her fingers. "he helped me through so much. i think i would have completely given up if it weren't for him and the members."
v. Would you rather Daughters of the Moon be disbanded or move to another company? Which company would you like?
yejoo's posture suddenly changed and her eyes slightly widened. she ran her fingers through her hair.
"i think disbandment is a bit much, but if being moved to another company wasn't an option, i think i'd want us to. of course, if the girls decide to stay together, i'd want to stay with them." her eyes twinkled at the thought of possibly moving to another company and continuing more happily with her members. "moonlight entertainment, i heard, treats their idols pretty well."

ACT ONE: FRENCH PINK
she was always an avid fan of seventeen since their debut. they had vibes about them that somehow drew her to them and their concept was almost golden. hip hop team??? sign me up seeing him through a screen was nothing compared to seeing him sitting right in front of her.
she and three of the other members were invited to be on a variety with four members of a boy group to talk about self-producing idols and their busy lives. she wasn't sure why the company chose her to go instead of someone else, but either way, she felt if she hadn't come, she'd be breaking some kind of destiny.
he sat across from her and watched her intently while she talked, cracked jokes, delivered variety. she tried to do the same, but if she focused too much on his voice, she felt like she would melt on the spot.
she felt like she was in a korean drama. everything happened so fast after the show finished and somehow she ended up with his kakao saved in her phone. she didn't even remember what she talked to him about, but she knew the conversation went well enough for her to recieve her first message from him the moment they got back to the dorm.
"have you eaten yet?"
ACT TWO: TERRA ROSE
they talked for hours on end those next few days. her voice echoed through the quiet night, chatting about their favorite songs on the roof of their dorm until midnight and past. she finds herself waking up on the blanketed concrete, holding her phone at 50% after a five-hour conversation about the history of their past lives. it felt wrong, in a sense.
the next day, the two ran out of things to say, which is rare. he jokingly told her just to let him know that she's alive by breathing heavily into the phone and she laughed. the next few moments were silent with the exception of crickets chirping in the background. she assumed he'd went to sleep after being scared by baehan opening the door to the rooftop to check on her, words slipping out of without realizing she hadn't hung up the phone.
"you gave me a heart attack, i thought you were jisung coming up to hit me."
the day came when they were supposed to go to music bank and their promotions overlapped with his group's. seungcheol wasn't sure if he heard her right since he was half-asleep and her voice was far away from the phone. he saw her dancing, though, and her smile was intoxicating. he brushed off the thought. this person couldn't possibly be experiencing something so awful, could she?
he noticed her bruises as the girls passed by and bowed to them, so as soon as she was alone, he went to talk to her.
he asked, she responded, everything seemed fine. she told him not to worry and that they were from the floorwork they were practicing. he watched them perform the next and couldn't push the thought to the back of his mind. the choreography didn't match the places where her bruises were.
she greeted him again, he asked if she was sure that she was alright, and she nodded, smiled, pushed away. he watched her figure as it walked down the hallway and sighed.
she had damn good acting.
ACT THREE: SWAN LAKE
then it happened.
that fancam of her falling all over the wet stage gained traction and eventually wound up on seungcheol's phone. he told her to be careful and she said all the same things.

he watched her stages and noticed how weak her dancing was, how she kept looking down and kept her hand behind her back. she passed him in the hallway and didn't make eye contact with him. they stopped talking for a while. he figured she might need a break to let her injuries heal, but he was wrong. she cried a few nights in a row because of the pain of radiating heat in her limbs and the feeling of being rejected.
"you ok?"
he saw she read the message and she hadn't responded in a few minutes. he started typing until a simple response appeared under his question.
"no."
that night, they talked for the longest they had ever talked. they talked until they met each other at a coffee shop at two in the morning. he stared at her puffy eyes and she stared back. they were both silent, neither knew what the other was thinking until she spoke up.
"why do you like talking to me?"
he couldn't speak for a minute, which she assumed was because he was thinking of reasons why. when he spoke again, he said he didn't have a reason. she was confused for a moment until he clarified, saying he didn't think he needed a reason.

these words paired with a cheeky smile made her exponentially more confused, especially after they ended the night with a hug. they went their separate ways quickly because yejoo thought she heard a camera shutter nearby. she hoped it wasn't what she thought, but seeing the next day's headline made her heart stop.

the ceo and managers gave her the scolding of a lifetime, she felt. yejoo felt like crying again but decided now wasn't the time to show weakness. the ceo didn't even ask her if the scandal was true, which explained why her instagram was flooded with comments when pledis denied and wanbyeok confirmed.
yejoo and seungcheol stayed away from each other for the time being, only talking briefly over kakao. he could tell she was heartbroken by her tone, but she did the usual "don't worry about me!!" routine. his response was different this time, which made her much more confused.
