He’s Dreaming

He’s waiting at the park – with a bouquet of daffodils in his hand, a bright smile on his face and anxious taps of his foot on the grass. Chanyeol waits under the shady tree; the one Chanyeol and Baekhyun shared their first kiss at, fidgeting as he anticipates his lover’s appearance.

On a particular Wednesday morning, he skips school – as today marks the 2nd year since they’ve started dating. Thus, awkwardly waiting, Chanyeol stands still in his school uniform. Just when he bites his lips, anxious and worried that his boyfriend might have gotten caught trying to skip school, he fishes for his phone in his pockets, but freezes once he feels the warmth of a familiar embrace from the back.

“Sorry I’m late,” Baekhyun says, murmuring against Chanyeol’s clothed back. “My foot kind of slipped when I tried to jump off the school gate.”

“Are you okay?” Chanyeol asks, genuinely concerned. “Can you walk? Do you want me to carry you? Here, you can get on my back—”

“Yeol, I’m fine,” His boyfriend chuckles adorably. “Happy two years.”

Chanyeol’s cheeks flush, sputtering as he hands him the daffodils. “I… I love you.”

Baekhyun laughs, bright and bubbly, pulling Chanyeol’s hand as he leads him to the playground. He welcomes himself in Chanyeol’s arms like a second home, resting his head on Chanyeol’s chest – heartbeat resembling soft hums. Chanyeol places a kiss on Baekhyun’s forehead, shutting his eyes closed.

The moment he opens his eyes, he’s back at the park. Sitting there, under the tree, with his worn out textbooks, waiting for Baekhyun to come along. And he does. Baekhyun flashes him a grin as he spots him from afar – Chanyeol’s heart beats rapidly, so swift that he only could hear loud thumps blasting in his ears. Baekhyun walks over to him, only this time, he has his hands wrapped around someone’s waist.

“Hey, Yeol,” Baekhyun gives him a small nod. “Sorry I’m late. Hyeri’s foot kind of slipped when we tried to jump off the school gate – I had to carry her all the way here.”

“It’s okay…” Chanyeol croaks out, a sudden lump pulsing in his throat. “Are you okay, Hyeri?”

“I’m fine,” She replies, smiling. “So, what’s the occasion of us skipping school this time?”

Baekhyun turns to look at his girlfriend, reaching out to play with the strands of her hair. “Well, today marks the second year since Chanyeol and I became best friends. We’re going to celebrate.”

“Happy two years, Baekhyun.” Chanyeol’s cheeks flush, opting on staring at his feet. I love you.

Baekhyun laughs, bright and bubbly, pulling his girlfriend’s hand as he leads her to the playground.

He’s waiting at the store – with his wallet in his hand, a worried smile on his face and anxious taps on his foot on the marbled floors. Chanyeol waits as the worker finds for the customized engagement rings that he had ordered a few months ago. He had planned to propose since they graduated from college – but the salary he receives from his job is never enough.

“Here it is,” The worker announces as she shows him the rings. “PCY and BBH, correct?”

Chanyeol nods enthusiastically, excited to see his boyfriend’s expression when he proposes soon. “Yes, that’s it.”

“It’s a very pretty ring.” She coos fondly. “Your soon-to-be fiancé is a very lucky person.”

Chanyeol gazes at the rings, somehow feeling quite terrified of rejection. “Let’s just hope the person would accept it, yeah?”

His heart bursts in joy – and Chanyeol closes his eyes, trying to imagine how Baekhyun would react when he pops the question.

And the moment he opens his eyes, he’s still at the store. Sitting there, staring as Baekhyun anxiously waits for the customized rings that he had ordered a few months ago. He pats on Baekhyun’s thigh to assure him that everything would be fine – although his hand lingers even after Baekhyun nods.

“Here it is,” The worker announces as she shows Baekhyun the rings. “Baek and Hyeri, correct?”

Baekhyun nods excitedly, grinning. “Yes, that’s it.”

“It’s a very pretty ring,” The worker sighs. “Your soon-to-be fiancée is an incredibly lucky person.”

Baekhyun swipes his thumb on the rings, looking a little worried. “Let’s just hope she would accept it, yeah?”

“Of course she will, Baek,” Chanyeol whispers. “It’s you that she’s marrying.”

He’s waiting outside of the kindergarten – with an umbrella in his hands, a proud smile on his face and anxious taps of his foot on the ground. Chanyeol waits as the bell rings, watching as little children run out of their classes. It’s their son’s first day of kindergarten – of course, Baekhyun had been a very concerned on how their son would be able to go to kindergarten without his parents, but Chanyeol assured him that their son needed to be more independent.

“Thanks for waiting for Hyunjoon with me,” His husband softly smiles. “I know how busy you are with work.”

“Baek, it’s fine.” Chanyeol runs his fingers through the brown locks of Baekhyun’s hair. “He’s our son after all.”

“Appa!” A loud scream comes from their left, and Chanyeol turns to see their son excitedly running towards his opened arms.

“Hey, big guy,” Baekhyun laughs. “How was it? Did you make any friends, baby?”

“I did, appa!” Hyunjoon nods. “We played with the toys that daddy bought for me.”

Baekhyun flashes Chanyeol a knowing smile as they walk towards the car, holding hands. Chanyeol closes his eyes, feeling absolutely blessed.

And the moment he opens his eyes, he’s outside of the kindergarten. Standing there, watching as Baekhyun gets startled by the ringing bell – both of them being amused seeing little children run out of their classes.

“Thanks for waiting for Hyunjoon with me,” Baekhyun softly smiles. “Hyeri’s been a little tired ever since she’s pregnant again.”

“Baek, it’s fine.” Chanyeol’s hands stay by his sides, his fingers twitching slightly, aching to touch. “He’s your son, after all.”

“Appa!” A loud scream comes from their right, and Chanyeol turns to see Baekhyun’s son excitedly running towards Baekhyun’s opened arms.

“Hey, big guy,” Baekhyun laughs. “How was it? Did you make any friends?”

“Lots of friends!” Hyunjoon enthusiastically says. “We played with the toys that uncle Chan bought for me.”

Baekhyun flashes his best friend a knowing smile as they walk towards the car. Holding onto his son’s hand, Baekhyun whispers. “Eomma misses you a lot, you know.”

“I miss eomma too,” Hyunjoon whispers back playfully, giggling. “And eomma’s huge tummy!”

Chanyeol closes his eyes, and this time, when he opens them, he ends up nowhere.
